Chapter 12 - A Cold Winter Night, an Ambush in an Alley, and Emma’s Defiant Stand

With the Bellini cartel completely dismantled, the streets of Little Italy erupted into a second wave of celebration.

The news of Vanessa’s arrest flashed across every local news network.

Outside Caruso’s Trattoria, the crowd grew even larger. Neighbors danced in the street to traditional accordion music, wine flowed freely, and the smell of roasting garlic and fresh bread hung over the entire neighborhood like a warm embrace.

Luca led me back into the main dining room, his hand securely wrapped around mine.

The moment we walked through the double doors, the entire restaurant rose to their feet in a roaring standing ovation.

Teresa Caruso came rushing out of the kitchen, carrying two steaming plates of the legendary ravioli.

She placed them down at the center table beneath the restored portrait of Don Antonio Moretti.

“Tonight,” Teresa announced loudly to the entire room, “we toast to the woman who saved this restaurant!”

She pointed directly at me.

“To Emma Reed! The bravest girl in Chicago!”

The room erupted: “To Emma!”

Glasses clinked across every table.

I felt a blush warm my cheeks, looking over at Luca, who was smiling at me with unvarnished pride.

He picked up his fork, took a bite of the pasta, and looked across the table straight into my eyes.

“To the bravest woman in Chicago,” Luca murmured, raising his wine glass toward mine. “And the only one who ever saw who I truly was.”

We ate together as the snow began to fall softly against the large glass windows of Taylor Street, dusting the city in clean, pure white.
