Chapter 8 - The Hidden Tapes of the Bellini Family

Vanessa stared at the dark red liquid inside the crystal glass as if it were boiling acid. Her hands began to shake violently, causing her own champagne flute to wobble before slipping from her fingers and shattering into a hundred glittering shards across the polished marble floor.

The explosive crack of the breaking glass made half the capos at the table reach instinctively under their jackets for their concealed holsters.

"I... I can't drink that," Vanessa stammered, backing away from Luca by a step, her chest heaving beneath her crimson silk gown. "It's... it's too heavy for me. I've had too much champagne already."

"Drink it," Luca said, his voice dropping into that deep, demonic register that signaled the end of a man's life.

Don Antonio slammed his heavy palm onto the table. "Enough of this circus, Moretti! You will not humiliate my daughter on the night of her engagement! If you do not wish to honor this alliance, say it plainly like a man!"

Luca didn't flinch. He didn't even turn his head toward the elder Don.

Instead, Luca raised his left hand and snapped his fingers once.

Above the dining hall, the massive electronic projector screen—usually reserved for reviewing international shipping manifests and surveillance feeds during war council meetings—hummed to life, dropping down against the north stone wall.

The hall plunged into darkness as the main chandeliers dimmed automatically.

A high-definition video feed illuminated the room with harsh blue light.

On the massive screen, crystal-clear audio and video played from Suite 204, recorded at 4:12 PM that very afternoon.

Vanessa Bellini appeared on screen, standing in the sunlight of the guest suite, holding the black titanium flash drive. Every guest in the room watched in absolute, horrified silence as Dmitri Volkov—the second-in-command of the Chicago Russian Bratva—wrapped his arms around Vanessa, kissing her neck while she handed over the encrypted security codes to Luca Moretti’s Cicero shipping terminal.

"Once Moretti falls in Cicero tonight," Vanessa’s recorded voice echoed through the high-ceilinged hall with deafening clarity, "the Bellini family takes over the North Side, and your people take the ports. Just make sure you don't leave him breathing."

Gasps of outrage erupted from the Moretti lieutenants.

Chairs scraped back violently across the marble floor. Weapons were drawn in a fraction of a second. Ten Moretti capos drew their automatic pistols, aiming them directly at Don Antonio and his four personal bodyguards.

Don Antonio’s jaw dropped in absolute disbelief. He turned toward his daughter, his face purple with a mixture of shock and sheer terror. "Vanessa... what in God's name have you done?!"

Vanessa looked around the room, realizing in a single, terrifying instant that the trap had snapped shut around her neck. Her aristocratic composure completely shattered, replaced by the feral, desperate panic of a cornered animal.

"He was going to control us, Father!" Vanessa screamed, pointing an accusatory, shaking finger at Luca. "The Bellini family was going to become his puppets! I made a deal that would put us on top!"

"You made a deal with corpses," Luca said coldly.

He tipped the crystal goblet of Château Pétrus forward, allowing the dark, poisoned wine to pour slowly onto the white linen tablecloth. As the liquid soaked through, the fabric began to hiss faintly, turning a sickly, chemically burnt brown around the edges.

Potassium cyanide.

"You brought poison into my dining room," Luca said, stepping forward until he was standing inches from Vanessa. "You conspired with the Russians to slaughter my men in Cicero. And you beat an innocent woman in my house because she had the courage you will never possess."

"Luca, please..." Vanessa wept, dropping to her knees on the marble floor, clawing at the hem of his trousers. "Please, I loved you! I did it for my family! Please, show mercy!"

Luca looked down at her with cold, empty detachment.

"Mercy," Luca said softly, "is for human beings, Vanessa. You are a traitor."

He looked up at Matteo, who stood near the main double doors with a squad of tactical enforcers.

"Take Don Antonio and his daughter to the basement holding cells," Luca ordered. "Strip them of all communications. And call the Cicero strike team."

"What are the orders for Cicero, boss?" Matteo asked, his eyes gleaming in the dim light.

May you like

Luca adjusted his burgundy silk tie with calm, terrifying precision.

"Tell the boys in Cicero that the Russians are expecting an ambush," Luca said. "Let us ensure we do not disappoint them."
