Chapter 13 - The Trial of the Broken Syndicate

Over the next three weeks, the Chicago underworld underwent the most violent, comprehensive restructuring in its history.

With the Bellinis erased from the board and Dmitri Volkov buried beneath six feet of unmarked concrete, the remaining syndicates fell into line with terrifying speed.

Luca held a grand council meeting at the Chicago Union League Club. Every boss, underboss, and capo from five neighboring states attended, kissing Luca Moretti’s signet ring and pledging absolute, unquestioned loyalty to the Moretti throne.

During those three weeks, I stayed by Luca’s side.

I didn't stay in the shadows of the domestic staff; I sat beside him in the private study, learning the legitimate business operations of the Moretti shipping empire, helping him review the community outreach foundations he had secretly established to protect the lower-income neighborhoods of South Chicago.

I watched a side of Luca that the world never saw.

To his enemies, he was a ruthless, terrifying warlord who commanded armies of armed men with a single glance. But to the people under his care, he was fiercely protective, extraordinarily generous, and possessed a deep, unshakable code of honor.

Every afternoon, Luca personally escorted me to the Evanston private medical estate to visit my mother.

My mother, Clara Hayes, was recovering at a miraculous pace. The color had returned to her cheeks, her lungs were clear, and for the first time in five years, she was smiling without pain.

One crisp Sunday afternoon, as Luca stood out on the hospital terrace talking quietly on his satellite phone, my mother reached across the white hospital bed and took my hand in hers.

"He looks at you, Olivia," my mother said softly, her blue eyes shining with maternal wisdom.

"What do you mean, Mom?" I blushed, looking down at our joined hands.

"A man who looks at a woman like that doesn't see an employee, or an associate, or an ally," my mother said, squeezing my fingers gently. "He looks at you as if you are the center of his entire universe. As if you are the only reason his heart still beats."

I looked out through the glass doors at Luca.

He was standing against the railing, his broad shoulders silhouetted against the bright blue winter sky. As if sensing my gaze, he turned his head, caught my eye through the glass, and offered a soft, private smile that belonged exclusively to me.

My heart swelled with a feeling so powerful, so profound, that it terrified me.

I wasn't just grateful to Luca Moretti.

I was completely, helplessly, irrevocably in love with him.
