Chapter 7 - Poison in the Vintage Glass

Downstairs, the opulent music of the string quartet had abruptly ceased, replaced by the tense, low murmurs of confused and nervous guests.

Luca stood up from the sofa, walked over to his private dressing room adjacent to the library, and emerged two minutes later wearing a fresh, immaculate black tailored shirt and a deep burgundy silk tie. He slid a suppressed 9mm pistol into his custom leather shoulder holster before pulling on his charcoal suit jacket.

He looked at me, sitting on the sofa wrapped in a heavy wool throw blanket he had draped over my shoulders.

"Matteo has four men stationed outside this door," Luca said. "The room is locked from the outside. You stay here, warm, until I come back for you."

"Luca," I called out, sitting up straight. "Vanessa... she carried a small silver vial in her evening clutch before the dinner started. When she was in the powder room, I saw her slip it into the lining of her bag. I thought it was perfume, but after what happened in Suite 204..."

Luca paused, his hand on the handle of the newly reinforced backup door. A dark, predatory understanding flashed in his eyes.

"The engagement toast," Luca whispered.

"She insisted on pouring your glass of 1982 Petrus personally," I added, remembering her sweet, persistent requests to the sommelier before the banquet began.

"She wanted an insurance policy," Luca said, his voice cold enough to freeze water. "If the Cicero ambush failed, she wanted me dead before midnight anyway."

He turned back toward me, a dangerous, razor-thin smile touching his lips. "Thank you, Olivia. You have given me the final piece of the board."

Luca stepped out of the room, and the heavy security bolts slid into place with a definitive thunk.

Down in the grand banquet hall, fifty guests were gathered around the central table. The patriarch of the Bellini family, Don Antonio Bellini—a bloated, silver-haired man in his late sixties—stood beside his daughter Vanessa.

Vanessa was fidgeting with her diamond bracelet, her eyes darting repeatedly toward the grand marble staircase, waiting for either her brother Enzo or Luca to descend.

When Luca finally walked down the staircase, moving with the slow, effortless grace of an apex predator entering a clearing, the entire room fell dead silent.

"Darling!" Vanessa exclaimed, stepping forward with her most dazzling, radiant smile, though her sharp eyes quickly scanned the perimeter for Enzo. "We were wondering where you had slipped off to! Father has prepared the final toast to unite the Moretti and Bellini empires!"

"I apologize for the delay, Vanessa," Luca said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the vaulted ceiling of the hall. "I was attending to a small... domestic pest problem on the third floor."

Vanessa’s smile flickered, a tiny shadow of doubt crossing her perfect features.

Don Antonio stepped forward, raising a heavy crystal glass. "To the future of Chicago! To the bloodline that will rule from the lakes to the borders!"

The catering staff began pouring vintage red wine for all twenty-six principal capos and family lieutenants.

Vanessa walked gracefully toward the head of the table, picking up a pre-poured crystal goblet of dark, rich 1982 Château Pétrus. She handed it to Luca with two hands, her green eyes glowing with false devotion.

"To us, my love," Vanessa purred softly. "To eternity."

Luca took the heavy crystal glass from her manicured hands. He swirled the dark red liquid slowly, watching the thick legs of wine cling to the cut glass.

"To eternity," Luca repeated.

He brought the rim of the glass to his lips.

Vanessa held her breath, her chest rising in anticipation, her fingers tightening around her own glass.

Then, Luca stopped.

He lowered the glass by an inch, looking straight into Vanessa’s eyes.

"Actually, my dear," Luca said casually, his voice echoing in the dead silence of the hall. "In the old traditions of Sicily, before an alliance is sealed in blood, the bride and groom exchange their cups to prove there is no bitterness between their houses."

Vanessa’s entire body went rigid. The color drained from her face in a matter of seconds, leaving her as pale as marble.

"Luca..." Vanessa laughed nervously, her voice trembling slightly. "That’s an ancient, silly superstition. We don't need to—"

"Take the cup, Vanessa," Luca commanded.

His voice wasn't loud, but it struck the room like a detonated warhead.

Don Antonio frowned, stepping forward. "Luca, what is the meaning of this disrespect to my daughter?"

May you like

Luca ignored the old man entirely. He extended the crystal glass toward Vanessa, his dark eyes locking onto hers with terrifying, suffocating intensity.

"Drink the wine you poured for me, Vanessa," Luca whispered. "Drink it to the bottom, and let us seal our eternity."
