Chapter 8 - The Shadow at the Gates

On the surveillance monitors, the battle across the Moretti grounds was fierce and merciless.

Arthur Bellini’s mercenary strike team had breached the central courtyard, utilizing smoke grenades and heavy automatic fire to push back Luca’s perimeter security.

I watched on the third monitor as a convoy of three armored trucks tried to surround the main entrance.

Suddenly, from the dense tree line bordering the northern road, a heavy industrial plow truck smashed through the mercenary flank, crushing the lead SUV against the stone retaining wall.

Out of the plow truck stepped a tall, broad-shouldered man with silver hair, wearing a dark trench coat and wielding a heavy pump-action shotgun with terrifying precision.

Even through the grainy black-and-white night vision camera, I recognized the commanding posture.

Salvatore Moretti.

The ghost had returned.

Behind him emerged a dozen seasoned, veteran soldiers—men who had remained loyal to the old regime, hidden away in safe houses for five long years, waiting for the signal to strike.

Luca emerged from the manor’s side portico, coordinating with his uncle’s sudden arrival with seamless, lethal synchronization. The mercenaries were caught in a catastrophic pincer maneuver between Luca’s high-tech security detail and Salvatore’s battle-hardened veterans.

Within twelve minutes, the courtyard fell completely silent.

The remaining mercenaries threw down their weapons, kneeling with their hands behind their heads as Salvatore’s men systematically disarmed them.

On screen two, the door to the wine cellar was forced open.

Arthur Bellini was dragged up the stairs by Daniel, his expensive suit shredded and covered in soot.

Vanessa was brought out from the cottage, weeping uncontrollably in her ruined scarlet evening gown.

The monitors showed Luca and Salvatore meeting in the center of the courtyard.

For five seconds, the two men—nephew and uncle—simply stared at each other beneath the estate floodlights.

Then, Salvatore racked his shotgun, let it hang by its sling, and pulled Luca into a crushing, emotional embrace.

Tears of pure relief flooded my eyes in the subterranean bunker.

It was over. The estate was secure.

Ten minutes later, the hydraulic locks on the bunker door hummed, and the titanium slab slid back.

Luca stood in the doorway, covered in gunpowder residue and light scratches, but entirely whole.

Beside him stood Salvatore Moretti, clutching a battered, worn leather recipe book against his chest.
