Chapter 11 - Desperate Retaliation

The weeks following the tribunal were a whirlwind of restructuring and healing.
Under Salvatore’s experienced guidance, the Moretti shipping logistics expanded smoothly, absorbing the Bellini empire without a single civilian casualty.
Arthur and Vanessa had been permanently exiled to a maximum-security overseas compound, stripped of every dollar and connection they had ever possessed.
My ribs were healing rapidly under the care of the estate’s private medical staff.
My brother, Leo, had been transferred to the premier pediatric cardiology wing in Boston. Luca had personally flown him there on his private jet, ensuring the top surgeons performed the valve repair surgery he desperately needed.
The surgery was a complete, miraculous success.
Leo was now recovering in a sunny recovery suite, laughing on video calls and telling me how Luca had sent him a brand-new gaming console and books for his studies.
I was sitting in the sunny conservatory of the Moretti estate, reading a novel among the blooming white orchids, when soft footsteps approached.
It was Luca.
He wore a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms and dark trousers. Gone was the rigid, guarded tension he had carried for years.
In his hand, he carried a long, polished wooden box tied with a new, vibrant royal-blue silk ribbon.
“How are your ribs feeling today?” he asked, sitting down on the wicker bench beside me.
“Dr. Harris said the fracture has fully calcified,” I replied with a warm smile. “I can breathe deeply without any pain at all.”
“Good,” Luca said softly. “Because there is something I want to show you.”
He set the polished box on the glass table between us and untied the blue ribbon.
He lifted the lid.
Inside lay his mother’s vintage wedding gown, fully restored.
The delicate lace had been meticulously cleaned and repaired by the city’s finest textile conservators. The silk glowed with a pearlescent, ethereal radiance under the conservatory sunlight.
Beside the dress lay the handwritten leather recipe book, resting in a custom velvet cradle.
“It’s breathtaking, Luca,” I whispered, gently touching the edge of the antique lace with the tip of my finger.

“My mother always said that this dress had a soul,” Luca murmured, his eyes fixed entirely on my face. “She told me that a dress made with so much love could only ever be worn by a woman of pure courage, fierce loyalty, and a heart large enough to protect those who cannot protect themselves.”
My heart began to hammer against my healed ribs. “Luca...”
