Chapter 13 - Dawn at the Precinct

By 4:00 AM, the lights inside the Manhattan District Attorney's office blazed like a beacon.
Federal agents and homicide detectives swarmed the building.
Sabine Lockidge sat handcuffed to a metal table in interrogation room three, bleeding and broken, signing a full confession that implicated every corrupt member of the Rallo board and detailed the engineering of the accident four years ago.
Outside in the hallway, Tamson stood by the tall glass windows watching the skyline turn a pale, bruised pink as dawn approached.
Evander walked up beside her, holding two paper cups of black coffee.
He held one out. She took it, her fingers brushing his calloused palm.
"He signed," Evander said quietly. "The DA is already issuing arrest warrants for the board members."
"My father's name is cleared," Tamson whispered, looking down into her coffee cup.
"The official record will show he was an innocent man killed by corporate greed."
"And you?" Evander asked, turning his head to look at her. "What happens to you now?"
Tamson took a sip of the bitter coffee.
"I go back to school. I finish my nursing degree."
Evander was silent for a moment.
"My mother asked about you this morning," he said.
Tamson looked up, surprised. "Did she?"
"She asked if Ruth was coming back."
Evander looked down at his shoes, a rare flicker of vulnerability crossing his stern features.
"I told her... Ruth's daughter had work to finish."
Tamson felt a strange warmth spread through her chest.
The man she had hated for months, the mafia boss she thought was a monster, was simply a son who loved his mother in a world that had taught them both how to kill compassionately.
"If she ever wants more butter on her toast," Tamson said softly with a faint smile,
"she knows where to find me."

Evander offered a rare, genuine smile—the first Tamson had ever seen on his face.
"The gates at Riverdale will never be locked to you, Tamson Hollis."
