Chapter 11 - The Chase in the Dark

Alarms began to wail throughout the Riverdale estate.

Red emergency lights flashed along the corridors, casting long, bloody streaks across the walls.

Evander pulled Tamson up by her hand.

"We need to move," Evander said. "Sabine has backup at the perimeter."

"What about your mother?" Tamson asked, her eyes wide with panic.

"She's on the third floor. Safe behind reinforced steel doors."

Evander shoved open a hidden panel behind his desk, revealing a narrow spiral staircase leading downward.

"This service tunnel leads to the boathouse by the Hudson," Evander explained.

"Wait," Tamson pulled back. "The ledger. Marcus said it's in a safety deposit box downtown. If Sabine escapes, he'll destroy all the evidence."

Evander looked at her for a long moment.

He saw the fierce determination in her eyes—the exact same spirit her father had possessed before they killed him.

"If we go after him now," Evander said, "we might not make it out of the property."

"If we let him go," Tamson replied, "neither of us will ever be free."

Evander gave a sharp, decisive nod.

"Then we take his car."

They plunged down the dark spiral stairs into the subterranean passages of the estate.

The air was damp and smelled of river water and old stone.

They emerged fifty yards away in the sprawling underground garage where Sabine's black town car was still idling near the exit ramp.

Two of Sabine's loyal guards were standing by the vehicle, loading assault rifles.

Evander didn't hesitate.

He raised his weapon and fired twice through the gloom.

Both guards dropped before they could raise their barrels.

"Get in!" Evander shouted, diving into the driver's seat.

Tamson scrambled into the passenger side, pulling the heavy armored door shut just as a burst of automatic gunfire peppered the rear windshield.

Evander slammed the gearshift into drive, stomped on the gas pedal, and crashed straight through the wooden security barrier of the garage exit.

The town car fishtailed on the wet pavement, straightening out just in time to catch sight of Sabine’s vehicle speeding down the winding Riverdale road toward the highway.

"Hold on," Evander warned.

He accelerated hard, pushing the heavy sedan past ninety miles per hour as they gave chase into the stormy New York night.
