Chapter 8 - The Gala of Wolves

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of opulence, corruption, and power.

Massive crystal chandeliers hung from forty-foot gilded ceilings, casting a brilliant glow over hundreds of guests dressed in haute couture tuxedos and designer evening gowns. Champagne flowed from ice sculptures, while diamond necklaces glittered under the lights.

At the center of the VIP terrace stood Marco Bellini—a tall, silver-haired patriarch with cold, calculating eyes, surrounded by his inner circle of corrupt city commissioners and syndicate captains.

"Where is Luca?" Marco muttered to his chief lieutenant, checking his gold pocket watch. "He was supposed to arrive with Vanessa an hour ago to announce the merger."

"Our men at the estate haven't checked in, Don Bellini," the lieutenant whispered nervously. "All communications from the Moretti perimeter went dark at three in the morning."

Marco's jaw tightened. "Something went wrong. But he wouldn't dare cause a scene tonight. Not in front of the High Council."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the entrance of the ballroom swung open.

The master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone, his voice echoing through the vast hall:

"Announcing Don Luca Moretti, Head of the Moretti Syndicate... and his guest, Miss Claire Bennett."

The string orchestra faltered. The chatter in the room died instantly.

Every pair of eyes turned toward the grand entrance.

Luca Moretti walked into the ballroom looking like an emperor of the underworld. His custom midnight-black tuxedo fit his broad frame flawlessly, radiating lethal elegance and unyielding authority.

And on his arm, holding her head high, was me.

I wore a breathtaking emerald-green silk gown with an off-the-shoulder cut that draped gracefully to the floor, concealing the discreet brace on my right wrist. A magnificent diamond choker—a Moretti family heirloom that had belonged to Luca's mother—rested against my collarbone, glittering with a thousand cold fires.

Whispers exploded through the crowd like wildfire.

"Who is that woman?"

"Where is Vanessa Bellini?"

"That's the Moretti ancestral diamond necklace!"

Marco Bellini's face turned the color of curdled milk. His glass of vintage wine shattered in his grip, red liquid dripping onto the polished marble floor.

Luca walked slowly through the parted sea of guests, his posture relaxed, his dark eyes locked squarely onto Marco Bellini.

"Smile, Claire," Luca whispered softly into my ear, his hand covering mine on his arm. "They are looking at their new queen."
