Chapter 14 - Restoring the Broken Clock

Before we walked down to the private courtyard chapel where three hundred guests and the entire reformed Syndicate Council awaited our vows, Luca took my hand and led me into the main foyer.

Standing in the center of the hall was Don Antonio Moretti's antique grandfather clock.

Daniel had spent the last three months completely restoring the magnificent walnut casing. The wood was polished to a deep, radiant glow, the brass trim gleamed like pure gold, and the missing silver second hand had been lovingly crafted and reinstalled onto the face.

Luca picked up the antique brass winding key.

He inserted it into the center arbor of the clock and turned it slowly.

Crank. Crank. Crank.

The internal brass weights rose smoothly inside the casing.

Luca placed his hand over mine, and together, we moved the minute hand forward.

The hands moved past 2:16... and settled squarely on 2:17.

Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.

The heavy pendulum began to swing with a steady, rhythmic, powerful heartbeat.

For the first time in twelve long years, the Moretti grandfather clock came alive.
