Chapter 5 - A Threat in the Dead of Night

Before I could process Luca's words, the sudden wail of an alarm pierced the silence of the estate.

The heavy iron security shutters over the bedroom windows slammed down automatically with a deafening metallic crash, locking us inside a steel-reinforced cage.

The lights flickered twice and died, plunging the room into darkness, illuminated only by the red glow of the dying fireplace embers.

Luca was on his feet in an instant, his sidearm drawn from the waistband of his trousers. "Stay behind me!"

The muffled sound of gunfire erupted from the lower floors—rapid, heavy caliber bursts, followed by the shattering of glass and the shouts of men in the grand foyer.

"They're inside the house," Luca whispered, his voice dangerously calm. He tapped his earpiece. "Daniel! Report!"

Static hissed through the line, followed by Daniel's strained, breathless voice: “Boss! Main gate breached by two armored trucks! They used explosives on the east entrance! They’re heading for the upper floors—they’re trying to extract Vanessa and reach Lily’s wing!”

Luca’s blood ran cold. "Lily."

His ten-year-old daughter was sleeping in the nursery suite at the far end of the west corridor.

"Daniel, hold the central staircase!" Luca commanded. "I’m going for Lily."

He turned to me in the dim firelight, grabbing my uninjured arm with fierce urgency. "Claire, there is a panic room behind the fireplace. Step inside, pull the lever, and do not come out for anyone except me or Daniel."

"No!" I said, my adrenaline overriding every ounce of fear. "Lily knows me! If you're fighting, she'll be terrified. Let me get her while you cover the hallway!"

Luca stared at me for half a second, seeing the unyielding determination in my eyes. "Stay low. Behind me at all times."

Luca kicked open the reinforced bedroom door and stepped into the smoke-filled corridor.

The air was thick with the smell of cordite and burning drywall. Red emergency beacon lights spun silently along the vaulted ceiling, casting bloody shadows across the walls.

Down the long hallway, two men in black tactical gear and night-vision goggles rounded the corner from the east staircase, their assault rifles raised.

Luca didn't hesitate. He fired three pinpoint shots in rapid succession. Both men collapsed instantly, their weapons clattering against the hardwood floor.

"Move!" Luca grabbed my hand, pulling me swiftly past the fallen intruders toward the west wing.

We reached Lily’s bedroom door. Luca turned the handle—it was locked from the inside.

"Lily! It's Daddy! Open the door!" Luca called out in a low, urgent voice.

The lock clicked, and the heavy door swung open. Ten-year-old Lily stood there in her flannel pajamas, clutching a stuffed white rabbit, her big brown eyes wide with terror as tears streamed down her cheeks. "Daddy! There were loud bangs downstairs!"

"I know, baby," Luca said, sweeping her up in his left arm while keeping his pistol raised in his right. He looked at me. "Claire, take her. Head back to the master suite panic room."

"Daddy, I'm scared!" Lily sobbed, burying her face into my chest as I took her into my arms, cradling her head against my shoulder despite the throbbing ache in my right wrist.

"I've got you, Lily," I whispered, holding the little girl tight. "I won't let anything happen to you."

Suddenly, the glass skylight above the corridor shattered in an explosion of crystalline shards.

A heavily armed mercenary dropped down from the roof on a tactical rappel line, landing directly between us and the master suite. His rifle swung up, aimed straight at my chest—and Lily.

There was no time for Luca to bring his weapon around.

Without thinking, I spun my body around, completely shielding Lily with my own back, bracing for the impact of the bullets.

BANG! BANG!

Two deafening gunshots echoed through the narrow hallway.

I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for the searing agony—but it never came.

I opened my eyes to see the mercenary collapsing backward onto the floor, a bullet hole through the center of his tactical visor.

Luca stood over him, his smoking gun leveled, his chest heaving with murderous rage. He had fired from the hip with impossible speed and precision.

Luca stepped over the body, his eyes wide as he looked at me and his daughter.

"You shielded her," Luca breathed, his voice trembling with an emotion so raw it shook him to his core. "You threw yourself in front of a rifle for my daughter."

"I promised I'd keep her safe," I whispered, my legs shaking so badly I could barely stand.

May you like

Luca stepped forward, wrapping his massive, powerful arms around both of us, pulling Lily and me against his broad chest in a fierce, protective embrace. In that smoke-filled, bloodstained corridor, surrounded by shattered glass and dying echoes of gunfire, I felt completely, undeniably safe.

"Nobody touches my family," Luca whispered into my hair, his voice vibrating with lethal authority. "Nobody."
