Chapter 17 - THE OLD PORT VAULT

Salvatore looked ancient.
But his eyes were unchanged from childhood photographs.
Cold.
Vivien stood beside him.
Mia sat in chair.
Unhurt.
Holding her rabbit.
“Uncle Lorenzo!”
My chest nearly broke.
Salvatore smiled.
“You became sentimental.”
“Give me the child.”
“Keys.”
Elena stepped forward.
“Mia first.”
Vivien laughed.
“She’s still a maid giving orders.”
I looked at Vivien.
“No.”
“She is the reason you’re still breathing.”
That shut her up.
We exchanged keys carefully.
Mia ran to Elena.
Then Salvatore opened vault.
Inside were ledgers.
Bearer bonds.
Property trusts.
Evidence connecting decades of criminal activity.
And one cassette recording.
Thomas Hayes’s voice.
He had recorded confession before disappearing.
Salvatore murdered my father.
Richard helped.
Thomas attempted exposing them.
Salvatore killed him too.
