Chapter 15 - The Queen of Long Island

Six months later, the bells of the historic Basilica of Saint Patrick in New York rang out in a joyous, triumphant chorus that echoed across the city.

It was our wedding day.

Over five hundred guests filled the towering cathedral—governors, international trade ambassadors, syndicate allies from five states, community leaders, and every member of the domestic staff from the Long Island estate, who sat in the front pews of honor.

Walking down the long marble aisle on the proud, steady arm of my recovered sister Lily, I wore an exquisite, hand-stitched ivory satin gown with a cathedral lace train that trailed twelve feet behind me.

Pinned above my heart was Donna Maria’s vintage silver cross, and sparkling on my finger was the ancestral sapphire.

At the altar stood Dante Caruso.

He looked breathtakingly handsome in his bespoke black tuxedo, his posture radiating the majestic authority of an emperor, his dark eyes watching me approach with a look of awe and adoration so pure it made my soul soar.

Standing beside him as his best man was Silvio, sharp and proud in his formal uniform.

And sitting in the seat of highest honor in the front pew, dressed in royal blue silk, was Mama Nina Rossi, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief, smiling with radiant, holy pride.

When Lily placed my hand into Dante’s, Dante leaned down, whispering against my ear with a voice thick with emotion:

“You are my home, Clara. Today, tomorrow, and for all eternity.”

“And you are mine, Dante,” I whispered back with a radiant smile.

We exchanged our vows before Archbishop Marino, sealing our sacred union with a kiss that brought the entire five hundred guests to their feet in a thunderous, standing ovation that shook the stained-glass windows of the basilica.

That evening, the grand wedding reception at the Long Island estate was a celebration unlike anything the syndicate had ever witnessed.

There were no whispered betrayals, no concealed daggers, and no fear.

The forty crystal chandeliers glittered over a ballroom filled with glorious music, joyous laughter, clinking glasses, and the irresistible, heavenly aroma of fresh homemade fig jam served alongside the wedding feast.

Beneath the central chandelier, Dante and I shared our first dance as husband and wife to a sweeping Italian waltz played by a full orchestra.

He held me close against his chest, his strong hand warm and possessive on the small of my back, spinning me across the polished marble floor where, months earlier, an engagement cake had been shattered.

“Are you happy, Donna Caruso?” Dante murmured, his lips brushing against my temple.

I looked up into the dark, loving eyes of the man who had torn down an empire of vipers to protect me and my family.

“I have never been happier, Dante,” I smiled, resting my cheek against his lapel. “The housekeeper is gone. And our house is finally whole.”

Across the room, Lily was laughing with Silvio by the terrace doors, while Mama Nina danced with an elderly capo, surrounded by cheering guests.

We stood together in the brilliant light of our home, knowing that our foundation was built on truth, loyalty, and an unbreakable love that no syndicate, no bullet, and no storm could ever tear apart.

The maid had become the queen, the humble nursemaid had reclaimed her rightful place of honor, and the House of Caruso ruled with light, honor, and justice forever.
