Chapter 11 - The Trial of the Five Families

Two weeks later, the grand council chamber at the Manhattan Yacht Club convened for the formal ratification of the new eastern syndicate charter.
The circular hall was bathed in afternoon sunlight, overlooking the sparkling waters of New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty.
Seated around the massive mahogany table were the bosses of the five families, dressed in formal bespoke suits.
Sitting at the head of the table, dressed in a sharp charcoal three-piece suit, was Dante Caruso.
Beside him sat Mama Nina, dressed in an exquisite lavender silk dress that Dante had personally commissioned from Milan, smiling peacefully as she sipped espresso from a delicate porcelain cup.
And seated directly to Dante’s right was me—Clara Evans.
I wore an elegant navy tailored dress, my hair pinned neatly, my posture calm and upright.
My sister Lily sat in the private gallery behind us, looking healthy, vibrant, and fully recovered, accompanied by the top medical specialists Dante had secured for her ongoing care.
Don Carmine Barzini unrolled a massive parchment document bearing the wax seals of the High Commission.
“Before this assembly,” Barzini announced, “we formally record the transfer of the Delacroix maritime holdings. Forty billion dollars in commercial shipping routes, private terminals, and banking charters are hereby permanently deeded to Dante Caruso and Clara Evans.”
Barzini turned to me, bowing his silver head in deep, solemn respect.
“Miss Evans, for your courage in defending the innocent, exposing thirty years of treachery, and preserving the honor of our founding families, the High Commission awards you the Golden Sovereign Medal and lifetime diplomatic immunity across all territories.”
The entire assembly of syndicate bosses stood as one, erupting into thunderous, unanimous applause.
The men who had built empires on blood and fear bowed their heads before the woman who had started her journey holding a dusting cloth.
When the meeting concluded, Dante and I walked out onto the private terrace overlooking the harbor.
A gentle autumn breeze ruffled the flags, carrying the crisp, clean scent of the sea.
Dante wrapped his arms around me from behind, pulling me back against his strong, warm chest, his hands resting gently over mine upon the marble balustrade.
“Are you happy, Clara?” he murmured softly against my hair.
I leaned back into his embrace, closing my eyes, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat.
“I have never felt so safe in my life, Dante,” I whispered. “We brought peace to your mother’s memory.”
May you like
“You brought peace to me, Clara,” Dante said, turning me in his arms to look into my eyes. “You gave this house a soul.”
