Chapter 11 - The Traitor's Confession

Forty-eight hours after the raid on the Drake Hotel, the dust finally settled across the city.
The federal courthouse on Dearborn Street was locked down by three tiers of Marshals.
Antonio Moretti had tried to plead insanity, then medical incapacitation.
None of it worked.
The digital ledger I had decrypted contained thirteen years of unassailable forensic evidence.
Every offshore bribe, every staged industrial accident, and the exact paper trail linking him to my father’s murder.
In a secure interrogation room on the sub-level of the Dirksen Federal Building, Daniel Russo sat across from Assistant U.S. Attorneys.
Because Daniel had turned state’s evidence under Luca’s strict conditions, his mother had been extracted safely from Naples by a private military contractor Luca funded.
Daniel signed eighty pages of sworn depositions.
When he walked out into the corridor under armed escort, Luca was waiting.
Luca wore a simple charcoal coat, hands in his pockets.
Daniel stopped three paces away.
His head bowed.
“Boss.”
“You’re not my soldier anymore, Daniel,” Luca said evenly.
Daniel flinched.
“I know.”
“Your mother is in an undisclosed property outside Dublin,” Luca continued, tossing an airline folder onto the bench between them.
“She has a garden. A monthly stipend. And total anonymity.”
Daniel looked up, his eyes rimmed with red.
“You didn't have to do that, Luca. Not after what I allowed into your home.”
“You did it under duress to save your mother,” Luca replied.
His tone remained cool, but the murderous edge from the safehouse was gone.
“A son protects his mother. I understand that better than anyone on this earth.”
Luca stepped closer.
“Take the flight tonight, Daniel. Change your name. Never return to the United States.”
Daniel took the folder.
His fingers shook.
“Thank you, Luca.”
“Do not thank me,” Luca said, turning to walk toward the exit.
May you like
“Thank Emma. She was the one who insisted your mother deserved peace.”
Daniel watched Luca walk into the harsh Chicago daylight, knowing he had been spared by the very maid he had once tried to shield from Vanessa’s wrath.
