Chapter 1 - The Visitor Without a Name

“Emma, tell Luca what you saw.”

Vanessa Bellini stood beside the grand dining table.

Her diamond necklace caught the chandelier light.

Thirty guests sat frozen.

Silver forks hovered above porcelain plates.

Not a single person dared breathe.

Across from her stood Daniel Russo.

He was Luca Moretti’s head of security.

Daniel’s jaw clenched tight.

His knuckles were white against his pressed trousers.

His skin looked gray under the chandelier.

Vanessa’s eyes flashed with venom.

“An unauthorized visitor entered the estate last night,” she announced.

She projected her voice across the vaulted room.

Then she pointed a manicured finger toward Daniel.

“And your chief of security failed to stop him.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No unauthorized visitor entered this compound.”

His voice was steady.

Yet a vein pulsed at his temple.

Vanessa laughed aloud.

It was a sharp, mocking sound.

“Then explain the perimeter alarm.”

She turned her sharp gaze directly onto me.

“Emma was working late.”

My stomach dropped straight into my shoes.

Cold sweat prickled across my spine.

“Tell Luca,” Vanessa commanded.

I kept my hands folded under my linen apron.

My fingers trembled.

I took a quiet breath to steady my lungs.

I looked at Daniel first.

He had always treated the staff with dignity.

Whenever my shifts ran past midnight, he made sure the patrol cars escorted us to our quarters.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

Her lips were curved into a triumphant smirk.

Finally, I looked at Luca Moretti.

He sat at the head of the table.

His dark eyes were impossible to read.

He was carving a piece of steak with surgical precision.

He did not look up from his plate.

Yet the sheer gravity of his presence crushed the air from the room.

“I saw someone enter,” I whispered.

Vanessa’s smile widened instantly.

“Exactly.”

She turned toward the guests.

“You see? A breach.”

“He wasn't unauthorized,” I added clearly.

The entire dining hall went dead silent.

Vanessa’s smile vanished like smoke.

The crystal glass in her hand shook slightly.

For several agonizing seconds, nobody moved.

Then she whispered:

“What did you just say?”

My name is Emma Reed.

I was twenty-eight years old.

I had worked inside Luca Moretti’s heavily fortified estate for eleven months.

Before this, I spent three years running server logs and access control for high-security commercial banks.

I was not hired as a security operative.

I was just a maid who wiped Italian marble floors and ironed suits.

Vanessa saw an apron and assumed I was blind.

She assumed I was stupid.

She did not know I understood digital registry algorithms better than her entire social circle.

Three hours before dinner, I was inventorying the service pantry.

The oak door had swung open violently.

Vanessa had walked in, smelling of expensive jasmine perfume.

Her eyes were bloodshot.

“Emma.”

“Yes, ma'am?”

“Were you on the east corridor rotation last night?”

“Yes, ma'am.”

“Until what hour?”

“Almost four in the morning.”

She stepped into my personal space.

The scent of her perfume suffocated me.

“Did you see a man enter through the private rear gate?”

I paused, clutching a stack of napkins.

“Yes.”

Her breathing hitched.

“Describe him.”

“Tall. Dark wool coat. Low brimmed hat.”

She gripped the edge of my utility cart.

“Did he bypass the checkpoint?”

“No.”

She froze.

“What do you mean, no?”

“He swiped a registered badge.”

Her manicured nails dug into the polished wood.

“Who issued that badge?”

I held my ground.

“You did, Miss Bellini.”

Her jaw dropped.

Then she let out a venomous laugh.

“Don't you dare lie to me, girl.”

I kept my chin level.

“Your digital signature cleared him through the inner courtyard gate at 3:14 a.m.”

Her face turned violently red.

“That is an absurd fabrication.”

“The log does not lie, ma'am.”

She leaned in until her lips were inches from my ear.

“Listen to me, you useless little maid.”

Her voice dropped to a sinister hiss.

“You survive here because I allow it.”

Her cold hand tapped my collarbone.

“Tonight, when Luca asks, you will state clearly that Daniel allowed an unregistered prowler onto the grounds.”

My chest tightened painfully.

“Daniel was on the north perimeter—”

“Emma.”

Her tone went Arctic.

“You need this paycheck for your sick mother in Evanston, don't you?”

My blood ran cold.

She had dug into my private files.

“I know everything about you,” she sneered.

“Do not become an obstacle for me.”

She spun around and slammed the pantry door behind her.

After she left, I didn't cry.

I went straight to the logistics workstation beside the laundry bay.

I booted the secondary terminal.

The digital log was right there in encrypted black and white.

Timestamp: 03:14:22.

Entry Gate: East Wing Sub-Level.

Clearance Level: Omega-Black.

Authorized by: Vanessa Bellini (Master Key 04).

Visitor Name: REDACTED.

Destination: Private Study / Vault.

My hands shook as I tapped the print command.

I took the thermal slip.

Folded it into a tiny square.

Slid it deep into the hidden hem of my apron.

Now, standing in the middle of thirty powerful mafia elites, Vanessa wanted my head.

“Emma,” her voice cracked like a whip.

“Correct your statement immediately.”

I looked straight at Luca Moretti.

He laid his silver steak knife down onto the plate.

The clink of metal against ceramic sounded like a gunshot.

“The visitor had full clearance,” I said firmly.

Vanessa sneered.

“You're fired. Get out of my sight before I have security throw you into the lake.”

“Sit down, Vanessa.”

Luca spoke for the first time.

His voice was a deep, gravelly baritone.

It rattled the silverware on the tablecloth.

Vanessa blinked in shock.

“Luca, she is disrespecting me in front of our guests—”

“I said sit down.”

Luca did not raise his voice.

He didn't have to.

Vanessa swallowed hard and sank back into her cushioned chair.

Luca turned his piercing gray eyes toward me.

“Step forward, Emma.”

My knees felt like water.

Every guard in the room had their hand resting near their holster.

I took four measured steps toward the head of the table.

“You claim the visitor held an authorized pass?” Luca asked.

“Yes, Mr. Moretti.”

“Who authorized it?”

“Miss Bellini.”

A collective gasp swept through the guests.

Vanessa slammed her palms onto the mahogany table.

“Luca! She is fabricating this to protect Daniel! They are conspiring against me!”

I reached down into the hem of my apron.

My fingertips found the folded thermal paper.

I pulled it out into the harsh dining light.

I walked the remaining two steps and laid the slip next to Luca's wine glass.

Luca picked it up with calloused fingers.

He scanned the digital barcode.

He read the cryptographic clearance stamp.

His face turned to stone.

“Daniel,” Luca called without looking up.

Daniel snapped to attention.

“Boss.”

“Pull up the sub-level terminal feed right now.”

Daniel produced a tactical tablet from inside his coat.

He tapped the screen three times and placed it before Luca.

The screen lit up with infrared night footage.

The timestamp flashed: 03:14:19.

A sleek black luxury sedan rolled silently to the private gate.

A man stepped out into the rain.

He wore a cashmere overcoat.

He pulled a keycard from his pocket.

The scanner glowed green.

The hydraulic gates hissed open without triggering a single siren.

The man walked purposefully toward the East Wing corridor.

Luca’s eyes narrowed into slits.

“The East Wing contains my private archives,” Luca said quietly.

Vanessa was trembling now.

“Luca, the system was hacked! Daniel let someone clone my security signature!”

Luca ignored her entirely.

“Fast forward the tape, Daniel.”

Daniel swiped his thumb across the screen.

03:34:02.

Twenty minutes later.

The heavy steel reinforced door swung open again.

The mysterious visitor walked back into the frame.

He wasn't alone.

A woman was walking directly behind him.

She wore a hooded charcoal wrap.

Her face was cast downward to avoid the infrared sensors.

Luca leaned closer to the glass screen.

His breathing changed.

It became shallow and dangerous.

“Halt footage,” Luca commanded.

Daniel froze the frame.

“Zoom in on the pendant around her neck.”

Daniel pinched the screen, blowing up the resolution.

A heavy silver pendant hung against her collarbone.

It was an antique crest—a coiled serpent eating its own tail.

Luca’s entire body went rigid.

A horrifying silence swallowed the room.

Luca stood up from his chair.

He was six-foot-three of pure, lethal tension.

“Isabella?” he whispered.

His twenty-three-year-old sister.

The one who was supposed to be studying art history in Florence.

The one Luca had sent away across the Atlantic to keep her safe from the Chicago mob wars.

Luca stared at the frozen image of his baby sister.

His eyes were burning with raw disbelief.

“Daniel,” Luca said, his voice deadly low.

“Get Isabella on the phone this second.”

Daniel hit speed dial and put the phone on speaker.

The dial tone echoed off the marble walls.

Ring.

Ring.

Click.

“Hello? Luca?” a feminine voice answered smoothly.

The background sounded like soft classical music.

Luca stared at the tablet screen.

“Isabella. Where are you right now?”

A tiny pause lingered on the line.

“I’m in my apartment in Florence, Luca. It's nine in the morning here. I’m having an espresso before lecture.”

Luca gripped the edge of the dining table so hard the wood groaned.

“Are you sure about that, Bella?”

She let out a soft, sweet laugh over the speaker.

“Of course I’m sure. Why are you calling me so late your time?”

Luca looked down at the tablet screen.

The timestamp showed Chicago local time: twenty-two hours ago.

“Because you are currently standing on my surveillance feed in the Chicago estate.”

Dead, absolute silence hit the speaker.

The breathing on the other end stopped instantly.

Luca leaned over the phone.

“Who is the man in the cashmere coat, Isabella?”

No answer came.

Only the sound of frantic, shallow breaths.

Suddenly, Vanessa surged out of her chair.

Her face was completely white.

She lunged toward the table, knocking over her crystal goblet of red wine.

The crimson liquid spilled across the white linen, soaking the logs.

“Luca, hang up the phone!” Vanessa screamed, panic shredding her voice.

Luca caught her wrist with terrifying speed.

He twisted it just enough to hold her completely immobile.

“Why?” Luca growled, looking into Vanessa's terrified eyes.

“Why are you protecting this man?”

Tears welled in Vanessa's eyes.

Her voice trembled so violently she could barely form syllables.

“Because if she tells you who that man is...”

Vanessa looked toward the dark doorway of the dining hall.

“You’ll find out that your father didn't die twelve years ago.”

Luca’s grip loosened.

His face drained of all color.

“My father was killed in a car explosion in Palermo. I buried him myself.”

Vanessa choked back a sob.

“That coffin was empty, Luca.”

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the far end of the dining room unlatched with a loud, mechanical thud.

Every guard in the room drew their weapon at once.

Footsteps echoed down the long marble hallway.

Slow.

Deliberate.

The heavy sound of a silver-tipped walking cane clicked against the tile.

Out of the darkness stepped the tall man from the video.

He removed his hat.

May you like

He smiled an icy, familiar smile.

“Hello, son,” the dead man whispered.
