Chapter 10 - Blood Against Blood

The aftermath inside the Drake Hotel unfolded with military precision.
Salvatore Marcone signed the non-aggression pact on a linen napkin.
The New York soldiers cleared the penthouse within fifteen minutes.
Vanessa Bellini was carried out on a stretcher, handcuffed to the gurney by two federal agents Daniel had secretly contacted.
She would spend the rest of her life in a federal penitentiary for wire fraud, conspiracy, and attempted murder.
Isabella arrived on the freight lift, running straight into Luca's arms.
The siblings held each other for a long, silent moment.
Twelve years of lies, running, and paranoia finally melted away.
Luca looked over Isabella’s shoulder, his eyes finding mine.
He didn't let go of my gaze.
By 6:30 a.m., the ballroom was empty.
Only Luca and I stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows.
The storm clouds had broken completely.
The first rays of dawn were painting the Chicago skyline in brilliant shades of gold, rose, and amber.
Lake Michigan shimmered beneath us like a field of diamonds.
I stood with my arms wrapped around myself, exhausted to the marrow of my bones.
Luca walked up behind me.
He removed his tuxedo jacket and draped it over my shoulders once more.
“You’re shivering,” he said softly.
I leaned back against his solid chest.
“I think the adrenaline is finally wearing off.”
Luca wrapped his arms around me, holding me securely against him.
We watched the sunrise together in silence.
“What happens now, Luca?” I asked quietly.
“To you? To the estate?”
Luca rested his chin against the top of my head.
“The estate will be rebuilt,” he said.
“Better. Stronger. Without the ghosts of the past.”
He turned me around in his arms so I was facing him.
His gray eyes were softer than I had ever seen them.
“And what about you, Emma Vance?” he asked, a gentle smile touching his lips.
“I don't think I can go back to being a maid,” I said with a faint laugh.
Luca chuckled.
It was a rich, warm sound that made my heart flutter.
“No,” Luca agreed.
“You certainly cannot.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, ornate silver key.
He pressed it into my palm and closed my fingers around it.
“What is this?” I asked.
“This is the master key to the Vance Family Trust,” Luca explained.
“My mother secured your father’s assets twelve years ago before she was killed. She made sure Antonio could never touch them.”
Tears welled in my eyes.
“My father’s legacy...”
“It belongs to you,” Luca said softly.
“All of it. You are a very wealthy woman, Emma. You never have to work another day in your life.”
I looked down at the silver key.
Then I looked up at the man standing before me.
“And if I don't want to leave Chicago?” I whispered.
Luca’s breath hitched.
His gaze dropped to my lips, then back to my eyes.
“Then you stay,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a fierce, passionate whisper.
“Not as a maid. Not as an employee.”
He cupped my cheek with his calloused hand.
His thumb traced the line of my jaw.
“As the woman who stands beside me.”
“Luca...”
“I spent my entire life surrounded by people who swore loyalty with their lips while holding knives behind their backs,” Luca murmured.
His eyes burned with absolute sincerity.
“You had nothing to gain. You had everything to lose. And yet you stood in the fire for me.”
He leaned down, his lips hovering inches from mine.
“I love you, Emma Reed Vance.”
My breath caught in my throat.
A wave of pure, overwhelming warmth flooded my entire soul.
“I love you too, Luca,” I whispered.
Luca closed the distance between us.
His lips met mine in a deep, fierce, and breathless kiss.
It wasn't a kiss of violence or mob wars.
It was a kiss of redemption.
A promise of a new dawn.
The sun broke fully over the horizon, bathing the penthouse in radiant golden light.
The city of Chicago stretched out beneath us, peaceful and alive.
The war was over.
The dead man was in chains.
May you like
The traitor was exposed.
And as Luca held me tightly against his beating heart, I knew that for the first time in my life, I was finally home.
