Chapter 5 - Whispers From A Dead Woman

The library was dead silent.
Only the crackle of the dying fireplace remained.
Luca stood in front of the open vault, holding the cassette tape in his hand.
He looked older.
The ruthless, untouchable mafia boss had vanished, leaving behind a son who had finally learned the truth about his mother’s death.
He looked over at me.
I was standing near the door, holding my canvas bag, feeling completely out of place in this world of blood and betrayal.
“Emma,” he said softly.
“Yes, Mr. Moretti?”
“Come here.”
I walked across the Persian rug and stopped beside him.
He picked up an old cassette player from the corner desk, slid the tape into the slot, and pressed play.
A faint hiss of static filled the room.
Then, a soft, melodic woman's voice came through the small speaker.
“If you are listening to this, Luca... my sweet boy... it means I was not strong enough to stop them.”
“Do not seek revenge in blood, my son. Blood only demands more blood.”
“Live with honor. Protect the innocent. And remember that the true strength of a man is not how many lives he takes, but how many he protects.”
The recording clicked off into silence.
Luca closed his eyes.
A single tear tracked down his scarred cheek, falling onto the polished hardwood floor.
He opened his hand.
In his palm sat his mother’s antique ring—the one with the feather inclusion that I had identified at the dinner table.
He looked at me with an expression I had never seen on his face before.
It was respect.
Pure, unadulterated respect.
“You saved Ray’s life tonight, Emma,” Luca said softly.
“I only told the truth, Mr. Moretti.”
“In my world, the truth is the most dangerous thing a person can speak,” Luca replied.
He picked up my uncle’s brass loupe from the table and handed it back to me.
“Your uncle was a great man. And you have his eyes. His brilliance.”
Luca slipped his mother’s antique ring onto his pinky finger.
“Tomorrow morning, you are no longer a maid in my house.”
My heart stopped.
“Sir?”
Luca looked at me, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his lips for the first time.
“I am reopening Thomas Reed Fine Gems in Oak Park.”
“I am funding it with five million dollars of Moretti capital.”
“And you are going to run it as the master jeweler and full partner.”
I stared at him, my breath catching in my throat.
“Mr. Moretti... I don't know what to say.”
“Say yes, Emma,” Luca murmured.
He turned toward the window, looking out into the clearing night sky as the clouds parted, revealing the pale glow of the full moon over the city.

“Because for thirty years, this family has lived in darkness.”
“And tonight, thanks to you, the light finally found its way back.”
