Chapter 14 - The Final Ledger

The spring arrived in Chicago with a warmth that melted the last remnants of winter ice.
The grand courtroom in the Dirksen Federal Building was packed to maximum capacity.
Judge Harrison banged his heavy wooden gavel three times against the sound block.
“Order in the court.”
Sitting at the defense table, wearing orange prison jumpsuits and heavy leg shackles, were Marco Bellini, Vanessa Bellini, and Matteo Moretti.
Vanessa looked completely hollowed out.
Her designer makeup was gone.
Her hair was limp and graying at the roots.
Her hands shook uncontrollably as the clerk stood up to read the verdict.
“On count one, conspiracy to commit murder: guilty.”
“On count two, interstate wire fraud: guilty.”
“On count three, racketeering and extortion: guilty on all counts.”
Judge Harrison adjusted his glasses, looking down at the defendants with cold, unyielding disgust.
“Marco Bellini, for your role in the murder of Isabella Moretti and thirty years of organized crime, you are sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.”
Marco slumped forward onto the defense table, weeping like a broken child.
“Vanessa Bellini, for your complicity in corporate fraud, fencing stolen heirlooms, and perjury, you are sentenced to twenty-two years in federal custody.”
Vanessa shrieked, clutching at her defense attorney’s arm, but two federal marshals immediately hauled her to her feet, pulling her toward the holding cells.
She looked back across the gallery, her bloodshot eyes landing on me.
I sat in the front row, wearing a tailored cream blazer, my hand resting comfortably in Luca’s strong grip.
On my finger, the Star of Genoa blazed in the courtroom lights.
Vanessa saw the ring.
She saw the quiet, unbreakable dignity in Luca’s eyes.
She let out a strangled, pathetic sob before the heavy steel doors swallowed her whole.
Outside on the courthouse steps, a hundred journalists and photographers shouted questions as Luca and I walked down into the warm May sunshine.
Microphones were thrust toward us.
“Mr. Moretti! Is it true you are liquidating all shipping assets associated with the Corvallis family?”
“Mr. Moretti, what happens to the Moretti foundation now?”
Luca stopped on the middle step.
He didn't shy away from the cameras.
He put his arm around my waist, pulling me close to his side.
“The old Moretti enterprises are officially dissolved,” Luca announced clearly, his voice carrying over the crowd of reporters.
“Every dollar recovered from the Corvallis estates is being transferred to the Isabella Moretti Educational Foundation for underprivileged youth.”
He looked down at me, his eyes full of warmth and absolute pride.
“And from this day forward, our family has only one business.”

“Reed & Moretti Fine Jewels.”
The cameras flashed in a blinding flurry of light, capturing the dawn of a new era.
