Chapter 9 - Playing with Fire: The Gala That Shook High Society

The double mahogany doors of the fiftieth-floor boardroom swung open with a resounding, thunderous boom.

Inside, the heads of the Five Families—the most powerful and dangerous men in the country—sat around a thirty-foot granite table. Silvio Russo stood at the head of the room, gesturing aggressively at a projection screen showing forged photos of the Moretti docks. Camille sat beside him, smug and triumphant.

Teresa Moretti sat calmly at the other end of the table, sipping her Earl Grey tea from fine porcelain.

Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance.

Luca Moretti walked in, exuding an aura of pure, suffocating dominance. Beside him walked Emma Carter, radiant in emerald silk, carrying the heavy, oilskin-wrapped ledger in her hands like a sacred offering.

Behind them stood twelve heavily armed Moretti guards, taking up strategic positions along the perimeter walls.

Silvio’s face instantly paled to the color of ash. Camille dropped her champagne flute, the crystal shattering against the hardwood floor.

“Luca!” Don Falcone, the eldest member of the commission, stood up, his hand resting on his cane. “Silvio claimed you had abandoned your post and executed his men in an unprovoked assault.”

“Silvio is a traitor and a liar,” Luca announced, his voice ringing through the cavernous boardroom like a death sentence.

“This is an outrage!” Silvio roared, slamming his fist onto the granite table. “You bring your maid into the sacred council chamber? You dishonor the bloodline!”

“She is not my maid,” Luca said, stepping directly in front of Silvio. His voice dropped into a low, terrifying growl that froze every Don in the room. “She is Emma Carter, daughter of Elena Vance, the rightful heir to the Carter Union Trust. And she holds the evidence that will send you to the morgue.”

Emma stepped forward, placing the heavy leather ledger onto the center of the granite table.

She opened the book to the marked pages, sliding high-resolution copies of the offshore bank transfers and federal informant contracts across the table to Don Falcone and the other family leaders.

“Fifteen years ago,” Emma said, her clear, powerful voice commanding the complete attention of every crime boss in the room, “Silvio Russo forged the Moretti signatures to traffic federal arms through civilian docks. When my mother, Elena Vance, refused to falsify the union audit to cover his theft, Silvio ordered the hit that killed seven union representatives.”

Silvio’s eyes darted frantically toward his armed bodyguards near the doors, but Gianni and the Moretti guards had already drawn their weapons, pinning them against the walls.

“That’s a lie!” Camille shrieked, jumping to her feet. “She’s a nobody from Chicago! She’s trying to steal our family’s wealth!”

“Shut up, Camille!” Don Falcone barked, his aged eyes scanning the documents with mounting fury. He looked up at Silvio, his face twisted in disgust. “Account number 9482 in the Cayman Islands... under your private shell corporation, Silvio. And a signed cooperation agreement with the Federal Department of Justice dated three weeks ago.”

The other three Dons stood up simultaneously, their hands moving toward their holsters.

“You were going to sell out the entire Five Families,” Don Falcone whispered, his voice trembling with rage.

Silvio realized he was cornered. In a desperate, frantic move, he pulled a snub-nosed revolver from his ankle holster and aimed it straight at Emma’s chest.

“If I’m going down,” Silvio screamed, “the Vance bloodline dies with me!”
