Chapter 5

Damian picked up the landline on the second ring.

He listened in total silence for ten seconds.

His knuckles turned white as he gripped the receiver.

“Lock down the estate,” Damian said into the phone, his voice dropping an octave into pure menace. “Nobody leaves. Not Victoria, not her father, nobody.”

He slammed the phone down onto its cradle.

He looked at Clara with a dark, calculating intensity.

“The police are on their way,” Damian said. “They’re on Victoria’s payroll.”

“Then we have to get out of here,” Clara insisted.

“No,” Damian replied. “We turn the tables right here.”

He walked over to a hidden panel behind his desk and punched a six-digit code.

The panel slid open to reveal a hidden safe filled with encrypted flash drives and bank records.

“Your mother didn’t steal from my father,” Damian said, pulling out a thick manila folder. “She was investigating the embezzlement scheme that funded this entire estate.”

Clara stepped closer. “Show me.”

“Look at the signature on that transfer order you’re holding,” Damian instructed.

Clara unfolded the yellowed paper.

Beneath her mother’s handwriting was another signature.

It belonged to Arthur Kensington—Victoria’s father.

“He framed my mother,” Clara gasped, the pieces finally clicking together in her mind.

“And then he killed her when she tried to expose him two years ago,” Damian added darkly.

The heavy footsteps of security guards rushed down the corridor outside.

The doorknob turned, but the door was still blocked by the dead intruder’s body.

“Mr. Costello! Are you alright?” a panicked voice shouted from the hallway. It was Chef Gerard.

Damian unlocked the side door and pulled Gerard into the room.

Gerard’s face went pale as he saw the bodies and the shattered glass.

“Victoria and her father are leaving through the east gate,” Gerard blurted out. “They said you were compromised.”

Damian looked at Clara.

“Are you ready to finish what your mother started?” Damian asked.

May you like

Clara wiped a tear from her cheek and nodded with cold resolve.

“Let’s go.”
