Chapter 14 - Whispers in the Walls

The supernatural occurrences escalated violently over the next week.
The temperature in the apartment would randomly plummet, turning Rachel’s breath into visible frost while she cooked dinner.
Sometimes, she heard desperate, scratching sounds coming from inside the drywall, like massive rats trying to claw their way out.
But the breaking point happened on a Tuesday night when Rachel was awakened by the sound of whispering.
She bolted out of bed, grabbing the heavy baseball bat she had kept beside her nightstand ever since the attack.
The whispers were coming directly from Madison’s bedroom.
Rachel crept down the hallway and gently pushed the wooden door open.
Madison was sitting straight up in bed, her eyes wide open but completely glazed over, staring into the empty corner of the room.
The air around the little girl was shimmering with tiny, floating particles of violet light.
"I don't have the key... I don't know how to open it for you," Madison whispered to the empty air.
"Madison!" Rachel screamed, dropping the bat and lunging forward to grab her daughter.
The second Rachel’s skin made contact with Madison, the violet particles vanished, and the room's temperature instantly normalized.
Madison blinked rapidly, shivering violently as if waking from a freezing nightmare.
"Mommy," she sobbed, burying her face into Rachel’s shoulder.
"They are so hungry, Mommy, they said Daddy locked the door from the inside and they need me to break the seal."
Rachel held her child fiercely, glaring into the dark corners of the room.

She couldn't fight this with a baseball bat or police backup.
First thing in the morning, she picked up her phone and dialed the only man she could trust: Detective Aris.
