Chapter 10 - The Syndicate’s Last Stand

The Moretti syndicate had miscalculated.
They assumed Emmett Castellano was just another corporate businessman playing at underworld politics.
They didn't know that Emmett had spent a decade purging his family’s criminal legacy precisely to build an empire of ironclad protection.
Within twenty-four hours, the Castellano intelligence network had traced the Baltimore courier back to an abandoned rail yard on the industrial outskirts of Ashford Landing.
It was Friday morning.
The snow was falling in thick, heavy sheets, muffling the sounds of the city.
An armored convoy of four black SUVs rolled silently through the snow-covered industrial park, coming to a halt outside a massive, rusted brick warehouse.
Inside sat Victor Moretti’s regional enforcers, led by a ruthless lieutenant named Salvo.
“Stay in the vehicle, Adeline,” Emmett commanded softly, shifting his tactical pistol into his holster as he prepared to step out into the freezing storm.
I reached across the leather console, grabbing his sleeve.
“No,” I said firmly, looking straight into his eyes. “I’m not hiding in the car while you fight my battles.”
Emmett stared at me, seeing the fierce, unyielding determination shining in my green eyes.
A slow, fierce smile touched his lips.
“God, I love you,” he murmured, leaning over and pressing a quick, passionate kiss to my lips. “Stay behind me at all times.”
“Deal,” I nodded, chambering a round in the sidearm Gio had handed me back at the estate.
The heavy steel doors of the warehouse blew inward with a deafening crash as Gio kicked them off their rusted hinges.
Gunfire immediately erupted from the shadows inside the warehouse.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Muzzle flashes strobed through the dim industrial space like jagged bolts of lightning.
Emmett moved with terrifying, predator-like precision.
He fired two rapid shots, neutralizing the primary gunmen stationed on the catwalk above.
Gio and the enforcer squad swept the perimeter, clearing the aisles with ruthless efficiency.
Salvo—the Moretti lieutenant—emerged from the back office, his submachine gun raised toward my chest.
“Drop your weapon, Castellano, or the girl gets a bullet!” Salvo screamed over the din of battle.
Emmett didn’t hesitate.
Instead of lowering his gun, he lunged forward at blinding speed, using his own armored body as a shield while firing a single, perfect shot straight into Salvo’s shoulder.
Salvo shrieked in agony, dropping his weapon as it clattered loudly against the concrete floor.
Emmett stood over him, pressing the cold barrel of his pistol against Salvo’s forehead.
“Tell Victor Moretti that Ohio belongs to the Castellanos,” Emmett snarled, his voice freezing cold. “And if any of his men ever set foot in my city again, I won't just send them back in a box—I’ll burn their entire syndicate to the ash.”
Salvo squeezed his eyes shut, trembling violently, and nodded frantically.
“We’re out! We’re out! Just don't kill me!”
Emmett stepped back, signaling Gio to cuff the surviving thugs.

The battle was over in less than four minutes.
