Chapter 4: The Line in the Sand

Downstairs, the atmosphere of the DeLuca mansion had transformed from the quiet stillness of mourning into the suffocating, thick air of a powder keg. Damon stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his private office, his silhouette stark against the moonlight that dipped behind the jagged mountain range surrounding their estate. Carson hovered in the doorway, his posture rigid, his eyes tracking Damon’s every movement with a mixture of professional concern and personal dread.

“If you move against him, the board will collapse,” Carson warned, his voice barely a murmur, yet it cut through the room’s silence with the sharpness of a blade. “You aren't just fighting a man, Damon; you are fighting the inheritance. If you expose his crimes, you expose the money that keeps this entire house standing. You expose the foundations of your own power.”

Damon turned, his face carved from ice, the cold light of the moon catching the sharp angles of his jaw. “I spent my entire life thinking that the cost of this family was a debt I had to pay with my own soul. I thought that the name 'DeLuca' was a shield, but now I see it was just a target. I’m done paying. If this house needs to fall to keep my son safe, then let the roof cave in. Let the glass shatter. I don't care anymore.”

Damon’s phone buzzed—a burner device he used for his clandestine, private investigations. He stared at the screen, the blue light illuminating the exhaustion beneath his eyes, his jaw tightening until the muscle bulged. “He’s moving tonight. He thinks he’s erased his tracks, but he’s forgotten one thing.”

“What?” Carson asked, taking a step into the room.

“That I taught him how to lie,” Damon replied, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. “And I know exactly what a liar looks like when he’s running. He’s going to try to siphon the final assets from the Caribbean accounts. He believes he’s the smartest man in the room, but he’s playing a game of chess against his own reflection.”
