CHAPTER 2: THE MAN WHO REALIZED HE WAS FEARED BY HIS OWN SON

Damon Cross did not move after Grace saw the drawing.

He just stared at it.

Like if he looked long enough, the word SAFE would rearrange itself into something less accusing.

But it didn’t.

It stayed there.

Small handwriting.

Final.

Truthful in a way his empire had never allowed anything to be.

Grace stood frozen in front of his desk.

“I didn’t teach him that,” she said quietly.

Damon finally looked up.

“I know.”

That answer hit harder than blame.

Because blame could be fought.

But understanding… couldn’t.

Outside the window, Lake Michigan looked like broken glass under gray sky.

Damon leaned back slightly.

“For two years,” he said, “he hasn’t spoken.”

Grace nodded.

“I know.”

“And last night…” his voice tightened, “…he drew me like I was the danger.”

Grace swallowed.

“You scared him.”

Damon’s jaw clenched.

“I protected him.”

Grace shook her head gently.

“You controlled him.”

Silence.

That word landed differently.

Not like insult.

Like diagnosis.

Carson entered without knocking.

“Boss,” he said carefully. “We found something in the security archive.”

Damon didn’t look away from Grace.

“Show me.”

Carson hesitated, then placed a tablet on the desk.

The screen played footage.

Evelyn Cross’s accident.

Or what had always been called an accident.

Grace leaned forward instinctively.

Then froze.

Because the footage didn’t show a crash.

It showed interference.

A black vehicle.

A forced lane shift.

A second impact point.

Damon’s expression didn’t change immediately.

But something inside him did.

Grace whispered, “That wasn’t an accident.”

Carson cleared his throat.

“We traced the vehicle. It was registered under a shell company linked to—”

He stopped.

Damon finished it quietly.

“My brother.”

Silence collapsed the room.

For the first time, Grace saw something in Damon’s face that wasn’t power.

It was shock that had nowhere to go.
