Chapter 14 - Don't Leave Me Again.

Daniel began changing the house the next morning.

The first thing he removed was the lock on Claire's red door.

He did it himself.

Lucas watched from the hallway.

Daniel unscrewed the old brass plate and handed the key to his son.

“You decide what happens to it.”

Lucas turned the key over in his palm.

Then he dropped it into a flowerpot.

Natalie smiled.

Claire cried quietly.

The second change was harder.

Daniel dismissed half the armed security presence from inside the house.

The gates remained protected, but the men outside bedrooms disappeared.

The mansion suddenly sounded different.

Less radio chatter.

Fewer shoes in the hallway.

More silence.

Good silence.

Daniel also began the legal process of stepping away from the parts of his empire that had kept the family under constant threat.

He did not pretend it could happen overnight.

He did not make grand speeches.

He simply started.

Lucas remained unpredictable.

Some mornings he sat beside Claire at breakfast.

Other mornings he refused to look at her.

Once, when she touched his shoulder without warning, he knocked over a glass and ran from the room.

Claire followed him only to the doorway.

She did not chase him.

Natalie found him in the music room.

He was sitting beneath the piano again.

“Did I ruin it?” he asked.

“Ruin what?”

“Her coming home.”

Natalie sat on the rug.

“No.”

“She looked sad.”

“People can be sad and still stay.”

Lucas looked at her.

That idea seemed new to him.

“Really?”

“Really.”

He crawled out from under the piano.

A week passed.

Then two.

The mansion settled into a fragile routine.

Claire read Lucas stories in the library.

Daniel came home for dinner instead of holding meetings until midnight.

Evelyn stopped speaking about restricted rooms.

She even put fresh flowers inside Claire's room.

Natalie's bruise faded from purple to yellow.

The bronze horse remained in a storage room.

Daniel wanted it thrown away.

Natalie asked him not to.

“Why keep it?”

“Because pretending it never happened would miss the point.”

Daniel understood.

One Friday evening, Natalie packed a small overnight bag.

Her sister was getting married in another city.

She planned to leave after Lucas went to sleep and return Sunday afternoon.

She told him during dinner.

His fork stopped halfway to his mouth.

“When are you coming back?”

“Sunday.”

“What time?”

“Before dinner.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Lucas nodded.

For the rest of the evening, he seemed calm.

At ten, Natalie carried her bag downstairs.

She reached the front door.

Then she heard bare feet running across the marble.

Lucas appeared at the top of the staircase.

His face was white with panic.

“Natalie.”

She set down the bag.

He ran to her.

She knelt.

“What happened?”

He grabbed her uniform exactly as he had the night of the bronze horse.

“Don’t leave me.”

The words tore through the foyer.

Claire appeared behind him.

Daniel came from the study.

Natalie held Lucas gently.

“I told you I’m coming back.”

“They all say that.”

He was crying now.

Natalie looked over his head at Claire.

The mother stood completely still, fighting the instinct to pull him away.

Natalie whispered to Lucas.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“I am leaving for two days.”

His face crumpled.

“And I am coming back.”

“You can’t know.”

“That’s true.”

Everyone looked at her.

Natalie continued.

“I can’t control every road, every plane, every surprise in the world.”

“I can only tell you what I intend to do and then keep my word as best I can.”

Lucas's breathing slowed slightly.

Natalie touched his chest.

“Being scared does not make a goodbye permanent.”

He stared at her.

Then Claire slowly sat on the bottom stair.

“I’ll be here while she’s gone.”

Lucas looked at her.

Claire did not open her arms.

She only waited.

Lucas released one hand from Natalie's uniform.

Then the other.

He turned toward his mother.

He walked three small steps.

Claire's face broke with emotion.

Lucas stopped in front of her.

“Will you stay until Sunday?”

Claire's voice shook.

“I’ll stay after Sunday too, if you want me to.”

Lucas considered that.

Then he leaned against her.

Not a dramatic embrace.

Not forgiveness all at once.

Just the weight of a tired child resting against his mother's shoulder.

Claire wrapped one arm around him and closed her eyes.

Daniel looked away to hide his tears.

Natalie picked up her bag.

For the first time since she entered the Brooks mansion, Lucas watched someone leave without falling apart.

At the doorway, she turned.

Lucas lifted one hand.

“Sunday.”

May you like

Natalie smiled.

“Sunday.”
