Chapter 13 - The Lie That Protected No One.

Victor was removed from the estate under Daniel's orders.
Daniel did not threaten him.
He did something Victor feared more.
He cut him out completely.
Every company account, house credential, security code, and legal authority connected to Victor was revoked before sunset.
Daniel also ordered an independent review of every document Victor and Marcus had handled for the family.
For the first time, Daniel used his power to uncover the truth instead of controlling it.
Claire returned to the mansion that evening.
She did not move into the main bedroom.
She chose the guest room nearest Lucas's room.
Lucas refused to sleep there with her.
He slept on the sofa outside Natalie's room again.
Claire found him there at dawn.
She did not wake him.
She sat on the floor several feet away and waited.
When Lucas opened his eyes, he saw her first.
His body stiffened.
Claire stayed where she was.
“Good morning.”
Lucas looked toward Natalie's door.
“She’s sleeping.”
“I know.”
“Are you leaving?”
Claire's face tightened.
“No.”
Lucas looked away.
“They all say that.”
Claire's eyes filled, but she did not reach for him.
“I heard.”
The door opened behind them.
Natalie stepped into the hallway.
Lucas immediately got up.
Claire's hurt was visible.
Natalie did not pretend not to see it.
She also did not push Lucas toward his mother.
Trust built under pressure was not trust.
At breakfast, Daniel entered carrying a box.
He placed it on the table.
Inside were photocopies of Claire's missing letters.
Evelyn had found them in Victor's private storage room.
Claire stared at the box.
Lucas climbed onto his chair.
“How many?”
“Twenty-three,” Daniel said.
“And the twenty-fourth?”
Claire reached into her handbag.
“I never mailed it.”
She placed an envelope on the table.
Lucas's name was written on the front.
He did not touch it.
“Read it.”
Claire looked at him.
“Out loud?”
He nodded.
Her hands trembled as she opened the envelope.
“My sweet Lucas, if this letter reaches you before I do, I need you to know one thing first.”
She stopped to steady her voice.
“You were never the reason I stayed away.”
Lucas stared at the table.
Claire continued.
“You were the reason I kept trying to come back.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Evelyn quietly left the room.
Claire read on.
“I was told you were safer without me near the house.”
“I believed that for too long because I was scared of making the wrong choice.”
“I should have trusted that a child needs truth more than adults need control.”
Lucas's lower lip trembled.
Claire stopped.
He looked at her.
“Keep going.”
She did.
“If you are angry with me, you are allowed to be angry.”
“If you do not want to hug me, I will wait.”
“If you need time, I will give you time.”
“But I will never again let silence tell you a lie in my place.”
Claire lowered the letter.
Lucas was crying quietly.
Natalie placed a napkin beside him but did not touch him until he reached for her hand.
Daniel watched.
The old Daniel might have been jealous.
This Daniel looked grateful that his son had somewhere safe to put his fear.
Then Evelyn returned carrying another folder.
Her face was grave.
“Mr. Brooks, the document review found something.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a bank authorization signed by Marcus before his death.
The payments had continued afterward through Victor.
Daniel read the beneficiary name.
His face hardened.
Claire stood.
“What?”
Daniel turned the page toward her.
The money had not gone to a rival.
It had gone to a private investigator.
The investigator's job had been to track Claire continuously.
Natalie read the final report attached to the file.
Her stomach tightened.
The most recent entry was from the previous week.
Claire Brooks observed near the estate.
Subject appears to be preparing direct contact with child.
Instruction received: prevent contact until further notice.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“You knew nothing about this?”
“No.”
The question in her eyes remained.
Could she trust him now simply because he had also been deceived?
Daniel seemed to understand.
“I’m not asking you to believe me.”
Claire stared at him.
“What are you asking?”
May you like
Daniel removed his house keys and placed them on the table.
“I’m asking what it would take for this house to stop being a prison.”
