Chapter 11 - The Cottage at the Edge of the Estate.

Daniel did not wait for his driver.
He crossed the rear terrace on foot with Natalie and Lucas behind him.
Two security men followed at a distance.
The rain had left the lawns dark and shining.
Beyond the formal garden, a narrow path curved through old oak trees toward a cottage that Natalie had assumed was empty.
Lucas held her hand so tightly that her fingers ached.
“Is she there?”
“I don’t know.”
“Will she know me?”
Natalie looked down at him.
“Of course she will.”
Daniel heard that.
His steps slowed.
The cottage windows were dark.
A black sedan stood beside the gravel drive.
Daniel recognized it and stopped abruptly.
Natalie saw anger move across his face.
“Whose car?”
“Victor's.”
Lucas pressed against her side.
Daniel motioned for the security men to stay back.
He walked to the front door and knocked once.
No answer.
He tried the handle.
Unlocked.
The cottage smelled faintly of tea and lavender.
A scarf rested over the back of a chair.
A woman's shoes stood near the fireplace.
On the dining table were twenty-three envelopes stacked in neat rows.
Every one was addressed to Daniel.
Every one had been opened.
Lucas stared at them.
“Those are Mom's letters?”
Daniel picked up the top envelope.
His name was written in Claire's handwriting.
The postmark was from six weeks earlier.
Inside, one sentence had been underlined twice.
I will not let Lucas grow up believing I chose to leave him.
Daniel lowered the page.
A floorboard creaked in the back room.
He moved toward the sound.
Natalie pulled Lucas behind her.
The bedroom door opened.
Victor stepped out.
His calm was gone.
His tie was loose.
Dark circles sat beneath his eyes.
Daniel looked past him.
“Where is Claire?”
Victor laughed once without humor.
“You still think this is about where she is.”
“It is about my son.”
“It was always about your son.”
Lucas flinched.
Natalie put a hand on his shoulder.
Daniel took another step.
“Explain.”
Victor looked at the letters.
“Marcus started it.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“He forged the guardianship request.”
“Yes.”
“He blocked Claire's calls.”
“Yes.”
“And after Marcus died?”
Victor looked at Daniel for a long moment.
“I continued.”
The confession landed without drama.
That made it worse.
Daniel's voice became almost quiet.
“Why?”
“Because you were finally stable.”
Natalie stared at him.
Victor continued as if he were defending a business decision.
“Claire made you question everything.”
“She made you weak.”
“She made me human.”
Daniel's answer came instantly.
Victor's face tightened.
“She wanted you to dismantle everything your father built.”
“She wanted my son to grow up without guards outside his bedroom.”
“Exactly.”
Victor pointed toward Lucas.
“And what do you think happens to a family like yours when protection disappears?”
Lucas began to shake.
Natalie stepped forward.
“Stop talking about him like he isn’t standing here.”
Victor looked at her.
“You are the reason this is unraveling.”
“No.”
Natalie held his gaze.
“The truth is.”
Daniel glanced toward the bedroom.
“Where is Claire?”
Victor's silence lasted too long.
Daniel moved toward him.
Victor raised both hands.
“She was here.”
“When?”
“Last night.”
Lucas's eyes filled.
Daniel's face changed.
“Why did she leave?”
Victor looked toward the window.
“Because I told her Lucas was gone.”
Natalie felt sick.
Daniel went completely still.
Victor kept talking.
“I told her you had taken him overseas.”
“You lied to her again.”
“I bought you time.”
“For what?”
“To decide whether you were going to destroy your life for a woman who already walked away once.”
Daniel's voice sharpened.
“She did not walk away.”
Lucas suddenly stepped out from behind Natalie.
His face was wet with tears.
“You made her think I left.”
Victor looked at him.
For the first time, the older man had no answer.
Lucas's small voice broke.
“You made both of us think the other one left.”
The cottage became silent.
Then a car engine sounded on the gravel outside.
Everyone turned toward the window.
A white sedan stopped beside the cottage.
The driver's door opened.
A woman stepped out.
Lucas dropped Natalie's hand.
He stared through the glass.
The woman had dark eyes, shoulder-length brown hair, and a yellow scarf wrapped around her neck.
May you like
Lucas whispered one word.
“Mama.”
