Chapter 5 - The Web of Collusion

The silence inside my office was so profound you could hear the faint hum of the fluorescent lights overhead.
Vanessa sank into the leather guest chair as if her bones had turned to liquid. The designer handbag she had brandished like a shield of status slid from her lap and landed unceremoniously on the carpet.
“Mercer Holdings...” she whispered, staring at the embossed card in her manicured fingers. “The real estate group that owns the Riverfront Center? The towers on Broad Street?”
“And the ground lease on Highland Square,” Daniel added, his tone entirely level. “Which means your husband has spent the last six months attempting to sublease property he had no legal right to develop, while pledging my corporate assets as indirect security to predatory private lenders.”
Vanessa looked up at Daniel, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror, humiliation, and desperate calculation. “Daniel... Emily... you have to help us. Richard didn't mean to do anything illegal. He was just trying to get us ahead! He was trying to provide for me!”
“By forging Mother’s signature on a high-risk promissory note?” I countered, stepping out from behind my desk. “By tricking a seventy-two-year-old widow into signing away the home our father worked thirty years to pay off? That isn't providing, Vanessa. That is grand larceny and elder financial exploitation.”
Vanessa burst into tears, covering her face with her hands. “Mother doesn't know the truth! She thinks it’s an administrative error! If she finds out Richard did this, it will kill her!”
“Mother is going to find out the truth today,” I said firmly. “Because at five o'clock this evening, Daniel and I are going to her house in Bexley. We are going to sit her down, lay out every single financial statement, and show her exactly what kind of man she has been championing while she spent the last three years belittling Daniel.”
“Please, Emily!” Vanessa begged, reaching out to grab the hem of my jacket. “Richard has an emergency meeting tomorrow morning at ten o'clock with the managing director of Apex Capital at their regional office downtown. If Richard can show them an extension letter from Mercer Holdings, Apex will roll the loan over for another ninety days! That’s all we need! Just ninety days! Daniel, you can sign the extension! It costs you nothing!”
Daniel looked down at her with a calm, unyielding expression that sent a chill through the room.
“Vanessa,” Daniel said quietly, “I do not sign fraudulent corporate extensions. And I do not bail out men who use vulnerable widows as financial shields.”
“So you’re just going to let them take Mother’s house?” Vanessa shrieked, her guilt instantly morphing back into defensive hostility. “You have hundreds of millions of dollars, and you’re going to let your own mother-in-law be evicted onto the curb? What kind of monster are you?”
“The kind of monster who protects his family from predators,” Daniel replied smoothly. “Your husband created this fire, Vanessa. And tomorrow morning, he is going to walk straight into the blaze.”

He turned to me. “Em, gather the audit files. We have an appointment with Marcus and the county prosecutor’s civil division at two o'clock.”
Vanessa sat frozen in the chair, watching as Daniel placed a protective arm around my waist and guided me out of the office, leaving her alone with the ruins of her fabricated life.
