Chapter 14 - The Final Reckoning

A few weeks later, Marcus Vance delivered the final legal closing binders to my home office.

Richard Sterling had been officially transferred to a federal correctional facility in Terre Haute, Indiana, to begin serving his seven-year sentence. Under the terms of the criminal restitution judgment, every single penny stolen from the tenant escrow accounts had been fully repaid through the liquidation of his seized assets and Mercer Holdings’ restorative fund.

Eleanor’s Bexley deed was permanently secured in an irrevocable family asset-protection trust that I had personally structured, guaranteeing that no predator could ever jeopardize her home again.

Vanessa had completed her first year of debt-free living, having paid off all of her remaining personal credit cards on her own salary. She had become an active volunteer at the Mercer Family Literacy Center downtown, teaching basic household budgeting to young single mothers.

The darkness that had once threatened to tear our family apart had been completely burned away, leaving behind a clean, honest foundation.

The autumn breeze carried the scent of pine and woodsmoke.

Daniel pulled me close against his chest, wrapping his heavy wool jacket around both of us to shield me from the evening chill.

“Happy, Mrs. Mercer?” he asked softly, his voice full of infinite tenderness.

“More than I ever thought possible, Mr. Mercer,” I answered, turning in his arms to look up into the eyes of the man who had transformed my entire world.
