Chapter 13 - The Golden Oak Estate

By the following autumn, construction on our family estate was complete.

The house sat gracefully upon the rolling green hill, built of local Ohio limestone and warm, reclaimed timber. Large paned windows welcomed the golden morning light, and a sweeping wraparound porch overlooked the meadow where deer grazed peacefully at dawn.

Down by the ancient oak tree, Daniel had spent three months of weekends building Noah’s dream treehouse with his own hands.

It was a masterpiece of craftsmanship—complete with a sturdy wooden staircase, a wrap-around observation deck, a telescope mounted toward the night sky, and a sturdy suspension bridge connecting to a secondary platform.

Noah spent every afternoon up there, doing his homework, reading adventure novels, and looking out over our home.

On a warm Saturday in October, we hosted our first official family gathering at the estate.

Mother arrived in high spirits, carrying a freshly baked strawberry rhubarb pie. Vanessa arrived with a coworker from the clinic, laughing and relaxed. Marcus and our extended cousins gathered around the outdoor stone fireplace, enjoying apple cider and grilled barbecue.

There were no flashy sports cars, no pretentious toasts, and no performative status games. There was only genuine laughter, warmth, and the comforting feeling of true belonging.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of violet and gold, Mother stood on the porch beside me, watching Noah and Daniel play catch in the yard.

“You found him, Emily,” Mother whispered softly, resting her hand over mine on the cedar railing. “You found the right man. Your father would have been so proud of the husband you chose.”

“I know, Mother,” I smiled, feeling a deep, profound peace settle over my soul. “I know he would.”
