Chapter 11 - The Setup: A Boss’s Calculated Retreat

Elena screamed in shock, dropping the bowl of poisoned pudding. The glass shattered across the hardwood floor, dark chocolate splattering everywhere.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the smoke of breached hinges, were four tactical operatives dressed in black body armor, their assault rifles raised and laser sights painted directly onto Elena’s forehead.
Behind them walked Vincent Moretti.
Elena stumbled backward, knocking over a vanity chair, her face turning chalk-white. “V-Vincent?! You’re... you’re in Savannah!”
I didn't answer immediately. I walked into the room with slow, heavy footsteps. My eyes locked onto the shattered bowl of poisoned pudding on the floor, then moved to the red handprint bruised onto Lila’s arm.
“Daddy!” Lila sobbed, reaching blindly toward the sound of my footsteps.
I dropped to one knee, wrapping my arms around my daughter, shielding her small body completely with my own. “I’m here, baby. Daddy’s here. You’re safe.”
I gestured to Julian, who rushed into the room carrying his medical kit. “Julian, take Lila into the safe room and administer the counter-agent right now.”
“On it, Vincent,” Julian said, gently lifting Lila into his arms and carrying her out of the room surrounded by three armed guards.
Once the door clicked shut behind them, the atmosphere in the nursery turned into absolute zero.
Elena was trembling against the wall, her hands raised defensively. “Vincent... please! It’s not what it looks like! Lila was having a tantrum, I was just trying to feed her—!”
“Shut your mouth,” I whispered.
The sheer, suffocating gravity in my voice choked the words right out of her throat.
“Tabun-X,” I said, stepping closer to her. “Methanol drops in her peach tea. Five ampoules in the chocolate pudding. Eighty million dollars in the offshore family trust. And a car accident waiting for me on the highway from the airport.”
Elena’s knees buckled. She realized with horrifying clarity that every single word, every scheme, and every phone call had been completely intercepted.
“Vincent... please,” she whimpered, tears of genuine terror streaming down her face. “Antonio forced me! He threatened to kill me if I didn't help him take your business! I had no choice!”

I pulled my custom .45 pistol from my holster and pressed the cold steel barrel directly between her eyes.
“You chose to poison an innocent seven-year-old child who called you mother,” I said, my voice dead and emotionless. “You had a choice. And now, you’re going to help me finish your uncle.”
