Chapter 7 - The Arrest on the Red Carpet

I walked until I stood at the foot of the stage, looking up at Nicholas and Patricia Ferguson.
"Eleanor?!" Patricia gasped, her voice shrill and trembling with rage as she stepped toward the edge of the platform. "What is the meaning of this outrage?! How dare you bring armed soldiers into this private event! Security! Where is the hotel security?!"
None of the hotel security moved. In fact, four Mecklenburg County police officers who had been hired for private detail quietly unclipped their radios and backed toward the emergency exits.
Special Agent Thomas Wright stepped onto the stage stairs, pulling a thick stack of blue-backed federal documents from his coat.
"Nicholas Ferguson," Wright’s voice resonated through the banquet hall’s sound system, amplified by the silent acoustic architecture. "I have a warrant for your arrest issued by the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina."
Nicholas’s face drained of every drop of color. "This is absurd! What charges?! I am a candidate for the State Senate!"
"You are charged with eight counts of Title 18 Federal Racketeering, four counts of Wire Fraud, two counts of Witness Tampering, one count of Deprivation of Civil Rights Under Color of Law, and one count of Aggravated Kidnapping and Assault resulting in Severe Bodily Injury," Wright declared.
A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the four hundred elite guests. Several society women covered their mouths in shock.
"That's a lie!" Gregory Ferguson shouted, storming toward the stage from the VIP table. "Our family has done nothing wrong! You can't do this without a hearing!"
Two Federal Marshals intercepted Gregory before he took three steps, grabbing his arms, twisting them behind his back, and slamming him face-first onto a round dining table, overturning wine glasses and silver plates.
CLICK-CLACK.
The sound of steel handcuffs locking around Gregory’s wrists echoed across the room.
"Gregory Ferguson," a Marshal announced loudly. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit money laundering and obstruction of justice."
"Mother!" Nicholas screamed, backing away from the podium as two more Marshals stepped onto the stage. "Mother, call Senator Vance! Call him right now!"
Patricia was trembling so hard her diamond earrings rattled against her neck. She pointed a shaking, manicured finger at me. "You will pay for this, Eleanor! You think you can humiliate my family in front of our friends, our business partners, our city?! We built this town! We own you!"
I stepped onto the stage, my boots clicking with measured precision until I was standing three feet from Patricia.
"You didn't build this town, Patricia," I said, my voice quiet, steady, and amplified through the live broadcast microphones that were still transmitting to five local television stations. "You looted it. You beat my daughter, you drugged her, and you locked her in a cage because you thought your money made you gods."
I turned to the media cameras that were frantically broadcasting every second of the confrontation.
"Captain Lin," I said into my lapel mic. "Transmit the feed."
Suddenly, the massive twenty-foot projection screens hanging behind the stage—which had been displaying Nicholas’s campaign logo—flickered and cut to black.
A second later, the high-definition surveillance footage of the Myers Park courtyard illuminated the room.
The entire ballroom watched in horrified, stunned silence as the video showed Nicholas dragging Abigail across the flagstones by her hair, kicking her broken body, and Gregory standing under an umbrella, smirking as he handed Nicholas a towel.
Screams and gasps erupted from the crowd. City councilmen began frantically walking away from the stage. Donors turned their backs.
Nicholas fell to his knees on the stage, burying his face in his hands as the video played on a continuous, inescapable loop.

"Take them," Special Agent Wright commanded.
The Marshals hauled Nicholas to his feet, wrenched his arms behind his back, and snapped the heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists. Patricia stood frozen, her eyes wide, staring at the screen that had just broadcast the indisputable truth of her family's depravity to over two million viewers across the state.
