Chapter 10 - The Reckoning: Nicholas Ferguson’s Trial

Six months later, the main courtroom of the Federal District Court was packed to maximum capacity for the sentencing hearing of Nicholas Ferguson.

Over the preceding half-year, the Ferguson empire had been completely dismantled. Ferguson Global Enterprises had declared Chapter 7 bankruptcy after thirty-two state and federal contracts were canceled due to procurement fraud. The Myers Park estate had been seized by the United States Marshals Service to be auctioned off for the victim restitution fund. Over forty-eight corrupt local officials—including the former police chief and two circuit judges—had resigned, entered guilty pleas, or were awaiting trial.

Nicholas Ferguson stood before the bench in an orange jumpsuit, his hands shackled in front of him.

"Does the victim wish to address the court?" Judge Vance asked, looking toward the prosecution table.

Abigail stood up.

Her broken bones had healed. The bruising was gone, replaced by a radiant, quiet strength that made my heart swell with pride. She walked steadily to the podium, adjusted the microphone, and looked directly at Nicholas.

Nicholas tried to look down, but Abigail’s voice made him freeze.

"Nicholas," she said, her tone clear, firm, and completely free of fear. "For eighteen months, you told me that I was nothing. You told me that without your family's name, I would disappear. You locked me in dark rooms, you took my voice, and you beat me until I believed that no one would ever hear me scream."

The courtroom was so quiet that Abigail’s soft breaths resonated through the speakers.

"You thought your mother’s money made you untouchable," she continued. "You thought that power was having the ability to hurt someone and buy their silence. But real power isn't money. Real power is the courage to stand up after being broken. Real power is the love of a mother who will move heaven and earth to protect her child."

Abigail took a deep breath, looking straight at Judge Vance.

"I don't hate you, Nicholas. Because hate requires me to care about what happens to you. You are nothing to me now but a closed door. I ask the court to impose the maximum sentence under the law."

Judge Vance nodded slowly. He looked down at the sentencing binder on his desk.

"Nicholas Ferguson, for the charges of Aggravated Assault, Racketeering, and Deprivation of Civil Rights, this court sentences you to thirty-two years in the United States Penitentiary at Pollock, Louisiana, with no possibility of parole. May God have mercy on your soul, because this court will not."

The gavel came down. BANG.

Nicholas collapsed back into his chair, weeping openly as the bailiffs pulled him toward the holding cells.
