Chapter 12 - Rebuilding What Was Broken

One year after that dreadful night in St. Bernard Hospital, the transformation was complete.
The heavy stone walls surrounding the Myers Park estate had been demolished, replaced with blooming magnolia trees, open stone pathways, and vibrant flower gardens. The grand brick house, once a symbol of cold aristocracy, was now filled with the sound of children laughing, dedicated counselors working in open sunlit offices, and women finding the resources, legal protection, and safety they had been denied for years.
Abigail sat behind a beautiful oak desk in the newly renovated director's office, reviewing the applications for three new legal aid attorneys. She was glowing with purpose and health.
The door knocked softly, and Sergeant Major Marcus Vance stepped inside, carrying a large cardboard box.
"Delivery from the base command, Director Gardner," Vance smiled, setting the box on her table.
"Marcus! What is this?" Abigail asked, opening the cardboard flaps.
Inside were four hundred handmade greeting cards, painted with bright colors, stars, and eagles, created by the children of the military families stationed at Fort Liberty.
"The unit wanted to send their congratulations on the one-year anniversary of the Foundation," Vance said warmly. "They haven't forgotten how you used to send them care packages during every deployment."
Abigail’s eyes misted with tears. She picked up one of the cards, drawn with crayon, showing a mother eagle shielding a smaller eagle under its wings.

"Thank you, Marcus," she whispered. "For everything. For coming with my mom that night."
"Ma'am," Vance said, standing tall with pride, "it was the easiest mission we ever executed."
