Chapter 12 - Broken Rules and Empty Rooms

Two weeks passed in agonizing silence.

Philadelphia felt colder, greyer, and completely empty without Dominic’s towering presence. The school had resumed normal operations with upgraded security systems funded anonymously by the Russo Foundation.

Marcus Vance had been fired from Meridian Capital and had fled the state after his financial fraud was exposed to federal prosecutors.

Claire was completely safe. She had her independence, her peaceful routine, and her quiet apartment.

Yet, she had never been more miserable in her entire life.

Every morning at The Roasted Bean, Sammy the barista handed her a vanilla latte, paid for indefinitely by an anonymous trust. Every evening, she walked past the empty brownstone on Green Street, the dark windows reflecting her own lonely silhouette.

She spent hours staring at the Note Dominic had left on his phone.

“I will burn my entire empire to ashes if it means she can live in the light.”

One evening, Claire’s mother, Evelyn, came over with groceries. As they sat in the living room, Evelyn noticed Claire staring blankly at the untouched tea on the table.

“Claire,” Evelyn said softly, setting her mug down. “Are you going to tell me what happened with Dominic?”

Claire buried her face in her hands, letting the tears flow freely. “He lied to me, Mom. He was born into the mafia. He commanded an entire empire of dangerous men. He failed my rules.”

Evelyn walked over, sitting beside her daughter, and wrapped her arms around her shoulders.

“Claire, sweetheart... when you made that list, you were reacting to Marcus. You were reacting to a man who used power to diminish you, who used wealth to control you, and who hid behind a false image of respectability.”

Claire sniffled, looking up.

“Did Dominic ever make you feel small?” Evelyn asked gently.

“No,” Claire whispered.

“Did he ever force you to do something against your will?”

“Never.”

“Did he ever brag about his power, or did he use it to protect innocent people when nobody was clapping for him?”

Claire’s breath hitched. She remembered how Dominic had treated the waitress at Lucca’s, how he had carried four heavy grocery bags without complaint, how he had respected her boundary when she asked him to pull the security team, and how he had thrown himself unarmed against a gunman to save her and her students.

“Marcus had a clean resume and a rotten soul,” Evelyn stated firmly. “Dominic has a complicated past, but his soul chose you. A checklist cannot measure a man’s capacity for sacrificial love, Claire. Only your heart can do that.”

As her mother spoke, a blinding clarity washed over Claire.

Dominic hadn't controlled her. He had empowered her. He had given up his own pride, his own comfort, and his own happiness just to respect her wishes.

She didn't care about the checklist anymore. She only cared about the man who loved her with every fiber of his being.

Claire stood up, wiping the tears from her face. “Mom... where are my car keys?”
