Chapter 11 - The Unmasking

Twenty minutes later, the school was surrounded by police cruisers, tactical teams, and ambulances. However, the local police chief spoke to Dominic with quiet, deferential respect, treating the incident as a coordinated domestic terrorist attack that had been swiftly thwarted by private security.
Dominic had arranged for a private medical team to check on the students and staff. Every student was safe, and the Vargas gunmen had been taken into federal custody under charges that would ensure they never saw daylight again.
In the principal's private office, Claire sat on a leather sofa, wrapped in a blanket, staring at the floor.
The door opened softly. Dominic entered alone, closing the door behind him.
The silence between them was suffocating.
“The students are all safe,” Dominic said quietly, his voice hollow. “Buses have arrived to take them home to their parents.”
Claire slowly lifted her head. Her eyes were red, swollen with tears, but her expression was sharp, guarded, and fiercely hurt.
“Who was that out there, Dominic?” she asked, her voice cracking. “Who sent armed men into my school?”
Dominic leaned against the edge of the desk, keeping his distance. “Salvatore Vargas. A rival family from South Jersey.”
Claire let out a bitter, trembling laugh. “A rival family? Not a rival real estate developer? Not a rival property manager?”
Dominic closed his eyes, accepting the dagger. “No.”
“You’re mafia,” Claire stated, the word hanging in the air like poison. “You’re the Don of the Russo syndicate.”
“I was born into it, Claire,” Dominic said, opening his eyes, his voice thick with raw agony. “My father built an empire of blood, extortion, and fear. When he died eight years ago, I had two choices: walk away and let psychopaths like Vargas slaughter my family and take over the city, or take the throne myself and dismantle the darkness from within.”
Claire stood up, letting the blanket drop to the floor. “So you lied to me! You sat across from me at the resort, you listened to my rules, and you smiled while lying to my face every single day!”
“I never lied about who I am with you!” Dominic stepped forward, his composure breaking, his voice rising in desperate passion. “Every word I told you about my life, my mother, my feelings for you—it was the absolute truth! I carried your groceries because I wanted to. I answered my mother’s calls because I love her. I respected your boundaries because you are the only thing in this miserable world that makes me want to be a better man!”
“And what about Rule Number Seven, Dominic?!” Claire cried, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Absolutely cannot be mafia! You knew that! You knew what I survived with Marcus—the fear, the control, the danger! And you brought assault rifles into my classroom!”
Dominic stood frozen, his jaw clenched, tears shining in the corners of his dark eyes.
“I know,” Dominic whispered brokenly. “I failed your rule, Claire. The only rule that mattered.”
He reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out his phone, and laid it gently on the coffee table in front of her. The screen was unlocked, displaying the Notes app from Memorial Day weekend:
Must be financially secure but not impressed with himself. (Checked)
Must be handsome without treating mirrors like a religious experience. (Checked)
Must carry Mom’s grocery bags without being asked. (Checked)
Must be kind to people who cannot help him. (Checked)
Must answer his mother’s calls. (Checked)
Must understand that "no" is a complete sentence. (Checked)
Absolutely cannot be mafia. (Unchecked)
Beneath the list, typed in small font, was a single sentence:
I will burn my entire empire to ashes if it means she can live in the light.
Claire stared at the screen, her breath catching in her throat.
Dominic took a step back toward the door. “The Vargas family is finished. Ethan and the Department of Justice have spent the last three hours seizing every asset they own. You are completely safe now, Claire. No one will ever threaten your school, your family, or your peace again.”
He placed a brass key on the table beside his phone.
“This belongs to the brownstone down your street. I have officially transferred the deed into your name. I am moving my operations back to New York tonight.”
Claire looked up, her heart tearing in two. “Dominic...”
May you like
“You deserve a man who fits all seven rules, Claire,” Dominic said, his voice breaking with profound sorrow. “I’m sorry I couldn't be him.”
He turned and walked out the door, leaving Claire alone in the quiet office.
