Chapter 7 - The Lion Wakes

The interrogation in the sub-basement took less than twenty minutes.

The assassin, his spirit broken by the burns and Tomas’s cold efficiency, gave up everything: Julian Thorne had paid him half a million dollars through a shell company in Panama. The cyanide had been supplied by a rogue biochemist on Julian’s payroll. More importantly, Julian had called an emergency meeting of the five regional crime syndicates at the Grand Harbor Hotel for Friday night.

Julian planned to announce Adrian’s "tragic sudden demise" and declare himself the new Chairman of the United Waterfront Coalition.

By Thursday morning, Adrian Cross had fully recovered his physical power. The weakness, the tremors, and the cardiac arrhythmias were entirely gone, his body restored by Nell’s strict medical regimen and the antidote. The lion had awakened, and he was hungry.

In the penthouse suite, Adrian stood before a three-way mirror as a private tailor adjusted the cuffs of a midnight-blue tuxedo made of hand-woven Italian silk.

Nell sat on the leather sofa, reviewing the chemical assay reports from the city’s water authority to ensure no other contaminants had entered the building’s reserves. She was wearing a simple blouse and slacks, but her mind was completely occupied by the sheer magnitude of what was coming on Friday night.

"You shouldn't go to that hotel, Adrian," Nell said quietly, setting the papers aside. "Julian knows he failed twice. He will have armed men in every corner of that ballroom. It’s an ambush."

Adrian turned from the mirror. He dismissed the tailor with a flick of his fingers. The man bowed and slipped out of the room instantly.

Adrian walked over to the sofa and sat down beside Nell. He took her hands in his, his thumbs gently tracing the soft skin of her knuckles.

"Nell," Adrian said softly. "For eleven years, I built this empire by being stronger, smarter, and more ruthless than the men who wanted to tear it down. Julian thinks I’m a broken old man hiding behind doctors. If I don't walk into that ballroom tomorrow night, the peace in this city shatters. Three hundred innocent families who depend on our docks and our logistics will be caught in a street war."

He looked deeply into her eyes. "I’m going. But I’m not going alone."

Nell frowned slightly. "Tomas is taking a tactical team?"

"Tomas is taking twenty men," Adrian replied. "And you are coming with me."

Nell’s heart leaped. "Me? Adrian, I’m a nurse. I wash clothes. I don't belong at a summit of mafia bosses."

Adrian reached over to the table and picked up a large, velvet-lined jewelry box. He opened it.

Inside lay a magnificent emerald-and-diamond necklace, the stones glowing with an inner, deep-green fire that matched the color of the sea at dusk. Beside it rested an exquisite emerald evening gown of hand-draped French silk.

"You belong wherever I am, Nell," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register of profound, unwavering conviction. "You saved my life twice. You looked at the most powerful men in this city and didn't blink. Tomorrow night, Julian Thorne will see that not only did he fail to kill me... he handed me the greatest partner I have ever known."

Nell looked at the emeralds, then at the man holding them. The fear that had lived in her chest for a decade—the fear of poverty, of violence, of being helpless in a cruel world—suddenly vanished, replaced by an intoxicating, soaring courage.

"If I wear that dress," Nell said, a faint, teasing smile touching her lips, "you have to promise me one thing."

Adrian raised an eyebrow. "Anything."

"You let me check your blood pressure before we leave the building."

May you like

Adrian threw his head back and laughed—a rich, booming sound that filled the penthouse with pure life.

"Deal," he whispered, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss against the hollow of her throat.
