Chapter 12 - The Siege of the 50th Floor

The gun battle that erupted in the penthouse was ferocious and deafening.
Tomas and Adrian immediately laid down a devastating crossfire from behind the reinforced marble reception desk, cutting down the first three mercenaries who attempted to rush the threshold.
Flashbang grenades detonated in the grand entryway, filling the vast room with blinding white light and earsplitting concussion waves. But Nell had already anticipated the assault; she had lowered the heavy silk blackout drapes, cutting off the mercenaries' sightlines and plunging the entryway into disorienting shadows.
"Flank left!" Marcus Vance’s voice screamed from the stairwell landing. "Take the bedroom corridor! Cut them off from the terrace!"
Four heavily armored mercenaries broke away from the main group, rushing toward the narrow corridor that led to the medical suite.
Nell didn't hesitate.
She slipped through the private service pantry, using her intimate knowledge of the building's hidden plumbing routes. She reached the chemical utility closet adjacent to the medical suite, grabbed two five-gallon pressurized canisters of industrial floor-stripping solvent—highly volatile and intensely slippery—and tipped them across the polished marble floor of the hallway.
As the four mercenaries rounded the corner at a dead sprint, their tactical boots hit the frictionless chemical slick!
All four men lost their footing instantly, crashing heavily onto their backs like bowling pins!
Before they could recover, Nell stepped out from the doorway, her nine-millimeter leveled with steady, two-handed precision.
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
Four controlled shots struck the mercenaries' weapon hands and shoulders, disarming them instantly and neutralizing the flanking assault without taking a single life.
"Corridor secure!" Nell shouted over the roaring gunfire.
In the main foyer, Adrian and Tomas were pushing the remaining attackers backward toward the stairwell. Adrian moved with terrifying, lethal efficiency, his submachine gun barking in sharp, disciplined bursts, driving Marcus Vance’s men down the concrete steps.
Marcus Vance, realizing his assault had failed, retreated toward the roof access door, firing wildly over his shoulder.
"Adrian!" Tomas called out, ejecting an empty magazine and slapping a fresh one home. "He’s heading for the helipad! Julian’s private helicopter is inbound to extract him!"
Adrian sprinted up the service stairs, his boots taking three steps at a time, with Nell and Tomas right behind him.
They burst through the heavy steel roof door onto the fifty-story helipad.
The wind was howling at forty knots, whipping rain across the concrete platform. In the distance, the twin searchlights of an approaching civilian helicopter cut through the dark storm clouds, hovering fifty feet above the landing pad.
Marcus Vance stood near the edge of the helipad, his tactical rifle aimed straight at the stairwell door. His face was twisted with manic desperation.
"It’s over, Cross!" Marcus screamed over the roar of the helicopter rotors. "Even if you kill me, Julian’s offshore trusts will activate! Every judge you bought, every dock you owned will be seized by federal receivership! You lose everything!"
"I don't care about the docks, Marcus," Adrian said, walking slowly onto the helipad into the driving rain, his weapon lowered at his side.
Marcus frowned, confused by Adrian’s calm demeanor. "What?"
"For twenty years, I thought this city was about power and concrete," Adrian said, his voice cutting through the howl of the wind with absolute clarity. "I thought winning meant owning every shadow. But you and your brother taught me something valuable."
Adrian stopped ten feet from the desperate gunman.
"You can take the docks. You can take the casino. You can take every dollar in the vault," Adrian said, his eyes turning toward Nell as she stepped onto the helipad behind him, the rain glistening on her face like diamonds. "Because the only thing that actually matters in this world... is standing right behind me."
Marcus let out a roar of frustration and raised his rifle to shoot!
Before he could pull the trigger, Tomas fired a single precision shot through Marcus's knee.
Marcus collapsed to the concrete with a scream of agony, dropping his rifle over the edge of the fifty-story drop into the dark harbor below.

Above them, the pilot of the extraction helicopter realized the mission was blown, banked sharply to the left, and fled into the storm clouds, disappearing into the night.
The siege of the Gilded Lantern was over.
