Chapter 11 - The Betrayal Within

The peace lasted exactly forty-eight hours.
On Tuesday morning, while Adrian and Nell were finalizing the legal transfer of Julian Thorne's seized commercial assets, a catastrophic power failure hit the Gilded Lantern Casino.
At ten-fifteen AM, all fifty floors of the tower went completely dark.
The backup generators kicked in for three seconds, sputtered, and died with a sickening whine of burnt turbines. The digital communication relays, the high-security electronic locks, and the private elevator banks were instantly paralyzed.
Tomas Reyes burst into the penthouse office, his weapon drawn, a heavy tactical radio pressed to his ear.
"It’s an internal sabotage," Tomas said grimly, static hissing through his receiver. "Someone poured four gallons of industrial acid into the primary fuel lines of the emergency diesel generators in the sub-basement. The communication towers are jammed by a high-frequency military scrambler."
Adrian was on his feet instantly, his instincts razor-sharp. "Who had access to the generator room?"
"The shift supervisor on Sub-Level Four," Tomas said, his voice dropping into cold fury. "Marcus Vance. Victor Vance’s younger brother. He’s been an undercover plant in our engineering department for two years."
Before Adrian could issue an order, the sound of heavy boots echoed up the emergency concrete stairwell outside the penthouse double doors.
THUD. THUD. THUD.
"They’re breaching the fiftieth floor," Tomas said, racking his rifle. "Marcus brought forty men from the harbor syndicate’s old enforcement wing. They know the police are tied up across town with a coordinated bomb threat at the federal courthouse. They’ve come to finish Julian’s work."
"How many men do we have on this floor?" Nell asked, her voice surprisingly steady as she immediately began securing the medical trauma kits from the wall cabinet.
"Four," Tomas replied. "Myself, Adrian, and two perimeter guards at the stairwell door. The rest of our security detail is trapped on the ground floor behind the locked fire shutters."
Adrian walked over to the antique gun cabinet in his study, unlocked it with a physical brass key, and pulled out two tactical submachine guns and several spare magazines. He handed one to Tomas and kept the other.
He looked at Nell, his dark eyes burning with fierce protectiveness. "Nell, there is a reinforced steel panic room behind the library bookcase. It has its own independent oxygen supply and a physical mechanical deadbolt. Get inside. Lock it from the interior. Do not open it for anyone except me or Tomas."
Nell looked at the panic room, then looked at Adrian’s arm.
"Your left shoulder is still stiff from the dock fight," Nell said, stepping up to him. "If they breach that door with flashbangs, you won't be able to reload a high-capacity magazine with one hand while holding a firing angle."
She pulled a heavy nine-millimeter sidearm from the open cabinet, racked the slide with a crisp, practiced motion, and checked the chamber.
"My father was a marine sergeant, Adrian," Nell said calmly, meeting his astonished gaze. "He taught me how to shoot when I was ten. I didn't hide in the laundry basement, and I'm not hiding in a closet while my husband fights for his life."
Adrian looked at her, a mixture of sheer disbelief and fierce pride illuminating his rugged face.
"God help anyone who ever crosses you," Adrian whispered, pulling her in for a hard, swift kiss.
