Part 7: The Final Confrontation

With the corporate threats neutralized, I finally felt the emotional weight of the last three months pressing down on my chest. I had dismantled the shadow network, but there was one last ghost I needed to lay to rest.
I drove out to the state penitentiary to visit Ryan.
The visitor's room was a sterile, depressing purgatory of cinderblock walls, fluorescent lights, and the lingering smell of bleach and despair. I sat on a hard metal chair, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, my posture perfect.
When the heavy steel door opened, Ryan was led in. The transformation was shocking. The arrogant, impeccably groomed CEO who had paraded his mistresses and mocked my intelligence was gone. His designer clothes had been replaced by a coarse, oversized orange jumpsuit. His skin was pale, his hair unkempt, and his eyes darted around the room with the frantic energy of a trapped animal.
He sat across from me, separated by a thick pane of reinforced plexiglass. He picked up the heavy black telephone receiver. I did the same.
"Claire," he wept. Real tears streamed down his face. "Claire, thank God you came. Please, you have to help me. The lawyers say I’m looking at twenty years. Twenty years, Claire! I can’t survive in here. Please, I’ve changed. I see what I did wrong. I love you."
I looked at him—a man who had once been my entire world, the man I had promised to love and honor. I searched my heart for a flicker of sympathy, a single drop of residual affection.
There was absolutely nothing. It was just a void.
"You haven't changed, Ryan," I said, my voice as cold and smooth as the glass between us. "You're just terrified because there is no one left to manipulate. You didn't love me. You loved the trust fund. You loved the power. You loved the illusion of control."
"Claire, please! My mother is sick, she's not doing well in the women's facility. We can make a deal. You have the power to talk to the district attorney. Tell them Elias forced me to do it!"
"Elias didn't force you to funnel fifteen million dollars to your mistress, Ryan," I replied, watching his eyes widen in realization that I knew absolutely every detail. "Elias didn't force you to belittle me in our own home. You made your choices. I am simply delivering the consequences."
He slammed his hand against the glass, anger finally breaking through his pathetic facade. "You bitch! You set me up! You ruined my life!"

"No, Ryan," I whispered softly into the receiver. "You built a house of cards, and I simply opened the window."
I hung up the phone. He continued to scream, banging his fists against the plexiglass as the guards rushed in to restrain him. I stood up, smoothed the front of my jacket, and walked out of the visitor's room. I didn't look back. The chapter was permanently closed.
