PART 16: THE PHANTOM SYNDICATE

The euphoria of the Eleanor Sterling Foundation gala lingered in my blood for exactly forty-eight hours before the ghosts of the past clawed their way back into my reality.
It was a rainy Tuesday. I returned to my penthouse after a grueling but successful board meeting, kicking off my heels and pouring a glass of sparkling water. The lights over the city were a blurred, glittering mosaic through the rain-slicked windows. I walked into my study to leave my briefcase, and that was when I saw it.
Sitting perfectly centered on my mahogany desk was a plain, unmarked manila envelope.
My security protocols were absolute. No one accessed this floor without biometric clearance. My pulse spiked, a cold, familiar dread pooling in my stomach as I approached the desk. I didn't touch it with my bare hands; I used a silver letter opener to carefully slice the seal.
Inside was a single photograph and a USB drive.
The photograph was of Ryan, taken recently inside his maximum-security facility. But he wasn't wearing his orange jumpsuit. He was sitting in what looked like a plush, private medical wing, smoking a cigarette, looking remarkably comfortable.
I plugged the USB drive into an isolated, secure tablet. A video file automatically began to play.
A woman appeared on the screen. It was Isabella, the mistress Ryan had funneled fifteen million dollars to all those years ago. But the terrified, naive girl Ryan had portrayed her as was nowhere to be seen. She sat in a sleek, ultra-modern office, dressed in a sharp designer suit, her eyes cold and calculating.
"Hello, Claire," Isabella said, her voice smooth and devoid of any accent. "Congratulations on your recent successes. You played the corporate game beautifully. You destroyed Elias. You absorbed Kensington. You locked Ryan away. But you made one fundamental miscalculation."
She leaned forward, resting her chin on her hands.
"You assumed Ryan was the mastermind. You assumed the fifteen million dollars he sent me was stolen for a romantic getaway. It wasn't. Ryan was an asset. The money he diverted was seed capital for a dark-money syndicate operating out of Eastern Europe. We used that capital to build a shadow logistics network. And now, the syndicate is calling in its dividends."
My breath hitched. Ryan hadn't just been an embezzler. He had been laundering money for organized cyber-criminals.
"We want three billion dollars in untraceable cryptocurrency, transferred to the accounts enclosed on this drive within seventy-two hours," Isabella continued effortlessly. "If you refuse, we will release fabricated, yet forensically flawless, evidence proving that the Eleanor Sterling Foundation is a front for international money laundering. We will trigger federal investigations that will freeze your assets, tank your stock, and destroy the lives of every young woman you have sponsored. We own the guards at Ryan's prison. We bypassed your penthouse security. You cannot hide, Claire. The clock is ticking."

The screen went black.
The Queen’s peace was over. I had spent five years building a fortress, only to realize the enemy was already inside the walls.
