PART 19: THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT

At 10:00 AM on Thursday, forty-eight hours after receiving Isabella's threat, I called a global press conference in the grand lobby of Sterling Global.

Hundreds of reporters, financial analysts, and cameras crowded the room. The flashbulbs were blinding. I walked to the podium wearing a stark, unyielding black suit. I didn't bring notes. I didn't bring lawyers.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I began, my voice echoing off the marble walls, steady and absolute. "For the past six years, I have fought to purge corruption from this company. I have demanded transparency, ethics, and accountability from my board, my employees, and my partners."

The room was dead silent, waiting for the drop.

"However, transparency cannot only apply to the present. It must apply to the past." I held up the leather-bound ledger I had pulled from the vault.

"Twenty-five years ago, my father, Charles Sterling, engaged in illegal offshore financial routing to save this company from bankruptcy. I discovered this evidence less than twenty-four hours ago. Today, I am proactively handing this ledger over to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the IRS, and the Department of Justice."

Gasps erupted from the press pool. Reporters began shouting questions, but I held up my hand, demanding silence.

"Because of my father's actions, Sterling Global will face massive historical fines. As the current CEO and sole heir, I will pay these fines entirely from my personal wealth. The Eleanor Sterling Foundation will not be touched. The employees of this company will not suffer for the sins of the past."

I looked directly into the central camera lens, knowing Isabella and her syndicate were watching.

"I am making this public today because a shadow syndicate attempted to use this historical secret to blackmail me. They threatened to fabricate evidence tying my philanthropic foundation to their own criminal networks unless I paid them three billion dollars. Let this be my official response to them, and to anyone who ever attempts to threaten this firm again."

I leaned into the microphone, my eyes burning with a fierce, unbreakable fire.

"I have no secrets left. There are no skeletons in my closet. You cannot extort a woman who is unafraid of the truth. And as of this morning, federal authorities, armed with data provided by my brilliant cyber-security team, have raided your server farms in Prague. Arthur Pendelton is in federal custody. Ryan Vance’s prison cell has been stripped. You are hunted, and you are finished."

I stepped away from the podium and walked out of the lobby, leaving the media in a state of absolute frenzy.

I had burned my father’s pristine legacy to the ground. But from the ashes, I had forged something entirely bulletproof.
