Chapter 7 - The Strike at Midnight

The warehouse on 4th Street was dark, illuminated only by a single bare bulb hanging from the ceiling in the center of the room.

Jax and Vance had set up the perimeter, taking positions in the high rafters with thermal scopes. Marcus was in a surveillance van parked two blocks away, monitoring the local police frequencies and hacking into the Corbett real estate servers.

At exactly midnight, three black SUVs pulled up to the warehouse. The doors opened, and eight men stepped out, including Brian, who was wearing a plastic splint over his broken nose, and Scott, who looked eager for a fight.

They walked into the warehouse, their boots echoing on the concrete floor.

I was sitting in a wooden chair under the single light bulb, my hands loosely bound behind my back with a plastic zip tie.

"Well, well, well," Scott sneered, walking up to me. "Look at the big hero now. Not so tough without your surprise attacks, are you?"

Brian spat on the floor near my feet. "Where are the cops, Ethan? I thought Miller was supposed to be here."

"They're busy," I said, looking up at them.

Arthur Corbett stepped out from behind his sons. He looked down at me, his face filled with disgust. "You made a very big mistake, Ethan. You thought you could challenge me. In this town, I am the law."

"You're a money launderer, Arthur," I said, my voice steady. "And a child abuser."

"We're going to make sure you never see your kid again," Scott said, reaching into his jacket for a heavy steel pipe. "But first, we're going to break you."

"Are you sure about that?" I asked.

Before Scott could swing, I pulled my hands forward. The plastic zip tie had already been cut by a small blade I had concealed in my sleeve.

At the same instant, the lights in the warehouse went completely black.
