Chapter 10 - Blood on White Silk: The Rescue That Cost a Lifetime of Secrets

Elena heard the gunfire tear through the warehouse.
Volkov cursed in Russian, drawing his sidearm and grabbing Elena by the collar of her emerald dress, dragging her backward toward a waiting speedboat moored at the warehouse dock.
"Move, you bitch!" Volkov snarled, using her as a human shield.
"Let her go."
The voice echoed from the shadows of the loading dock.
Enzo stepped out of the haze, his rifle lowered, his pistol raised in his right hand. His face was streaked with soot and blood, but his eyes were locked onto Volkov's skull.
"One step closer and I put a hole through her head!" Volkov shouted, pressing the cold barrel of his revolver against Elena’s temple.
Elena looked at Enzo. She didn't see fear in his eyes; she saw a silent message.
Trust me.
Elena remembered her father’s self-defense lessons. Without warning, she drove the sharp, four-inch stiletto heel of her shoe directly down onto Volkov’s instep with all her weight, simultaneously throwing her head backward into his nose.
Volkov roared in pain, his aim jerking upward.
Bang.
Enzo fired with terrifying speed. The bullet struck Volkov's shoulder, spinning the giant around. Enzo closed the distance in three massive strides, tackling Volkov to the ground. A brutal sequence of blows echoed through the dock until Volkov lay unconscious and broken on the concrete.
Enzo dropped his weapon and turned instantly to Elena. He caught her as her knees gave out, lifting her up into his arms against his bloodstained tactical vest.

"I have you," Enzo breathed, his voice cracking as he buried his face in her hair. "I have you, Elena. You're safe."
Elena buried her face in his chest, sobbing in relief as the sirens of the approaching police convoy wailed in the distance.
