Chapter 6 - The Smear Campaign Begins While the Serpent Walks Free on Bail

The next forty-eight hours were a waking nightmare.
Instead of hiding in shame, Daniel and Evelyn launched an immediate, vicious public relations blitz. By the time Noah and I were discharged from the hospital under high security, every local news outlet and social media feed was flooded with press conferences held on the steps of the county courthouse.
Dressed in a pristine charcoal suit, his arm lovingly linked with his defense attorney and Evelyn Cross standing solemnly in the background, Daniel addressed a mob of microphones.
"I am utterly devastated by the baseless accusations leveled against me during this traumatic family emergency," Daniel spoke, his voice trembling with manufactured grief. "My wife, Sarah, has been battling severe, undiagnosed postpartum depression and psychiatric instability for years. What happened the other night was a tragic accident caused by Sarah's own erratic behavior in the kitchen. She has concocted this grotesque narrative out of paranoia and spite to destroy my career and alienate me from my beloved son."
I watched the broadcast on the television inside the safehouse Detective Miller had arranged for us. My hands shook with such violent rage that the glass of water in my grip shattered against the countertop.
"He's calling you crazy on live TV," Clara gasped, staring at the screen in horror. "Sarah, half the neighborhood comments online are believing him! People are saying you always seemed 'stressed' and 'withdrawn' at school events!"
"Of course they believe him," I said, my voice cold and lethal. "Daniel spent twelve years cultivating the image of the saintly, philanthropic family man. He knows how to manipulate people. He's trying to taint the jury pool before the DA can even present the indictment."
Noah walked out of the safehouse bedroom, his face pale and drawn. He looked at the television screen, watching his father shed fake tears for the cameras.
"He tried to kill us, Mom," Noah said quietly, his voice cracking with betrayal. "He looked me in the eyes, touched my shoulder, and told me it would be 'easier for everybody.' And now he's lying to the whole world."
I crossed the room and pulled Noah into my arms, holding the back of his head against my chest.
"Listen to me, Noah," I said firmly, looking directly into his eyes. "The truth doesn't care about press conferences. The truth doesn't care about money or fancy lawyers. We have the poison sample. We have the insurance forgery. And we are going to tear down every single lie he ever told."
The phone in Detective Miller’s hands rang. He answered it, listened for twenty seconds, and hung up with a dark scowl.
"The lab results on the frozen chicken just officially cleared," Miller announced. "Vecuronium and Zolpidem were found in lethal concentrations throughout the food. But there's a catch."
"What catch?" I asked.
"Daniel’s legal team just filed an emergency motion to suppress the evidence," ADA Marcus explained over speakerphone. "They are arguing that because you secured the food sample yourself while allegedly 'impaired,' the chain of custody was contaminated and the evidence was obtained illegally without a warrant. If Judge Julian Cross—Evelyn’s father—gets assigned to this preliminary hearing, he might actually grant the motion."

The corruption was staggering. The system meant to protect us was being twisted by the very people who had orchestrated our attempted murder.
"If the system won't let us fight them in the courtroom," I said, my eyes narrowing, "then we bait them into destroying themselves."
