Chapter 10 - The Narcissist’s Mask Crumbles by the Pier

"Why, Daniel?" I asked, my voice carrying over the crashing waves beneath our feet. "Why couldn't you just ask for a divorce? Why did you have to poison Noah? He’s your son!"

Daniel let out a cold, dismissive laugh that turned my stomach.

"A divorce?" Daniel mocked, taking half a step closer. "Do you have any idea how family court works in this state, Sarah? You would have taken half of Vance Capital. You would have taken the house, child support, alimony. You would have triggered a forensic audit that would have exposed every offshore ledger I created!"

"So you decided we were worth more dead," I said, keeping my voice steady for the wire. "Five million dollars from the policy you forged in my name."

"Five million dollars cleans the slate," Daniel sneered, his eyes flashing with psychopathic arrogance. "It pays back the Cayman accounts, it buys Evelyn and me the penthouse in Zurich, and it closes the federal audit permanently. You and Noah were dead weight dragging down my legacy."

"And the Vecuronium?" I pressed. "You watched Noah choke on his own saliva at that table, Daniel! You held my wrist and checked my pulse like we were laboratory rats!"

"Evelyn got the chemical from her brother's surgical clinic. It was supposed to be completely painless!" Daniel shouted, his composure finally fracturing into unhinged rage. "If you had just stayed unconscious like you were supposed to, it would have been over! But no... you had to hide a food sample in the freezer. You had to call the police. You forced me to hire Victor to track you down at Blackwood Ridge and finish the job!"

Inside my hidden earpiece, Detective Miller’s voice crackled: "We got it all. Every single confession. Team, GO, GO, GO!"

Suddenly, the deafening roar of high-performance engines erupted from the far end of the pier.

A silver Porsche Cayenne came barreling out from behind the shipping containers at sixty miles per hour. It wasn't the police.

It was Evelyn Cross.

She had been monitoring the police frequencies on a private scanner and realized the trap had been sprung. She slammed on the brakes, sliding the Porsche sideways between Daniel and me, the passenger door flying open.

"Daniel, get in! It's a setup! The federal vans are at the entrance!" Evelyn screamed through the window.

Daniel’s eyes widened with sudden, violent realization. He looked at my coat, spotted the pinhole camera in my button, and lunged forward to grab me.

"You miserable bitch!" Daniel roared.

I didn't hesitate. I dropped my weight, side-stepped his desperate lunge, and delivered a vicious palm strike straight into his broken, arrogant nose.

Daniel shrieked in pain, stumbling backward and collapsing against the hood of Evelyn’s Porsche, blood pouring over his cashmere coat.

Sirens tore through the fog as three black SWAT Suburbans breached the pier gates, blocking the main exit.

"Get in the car, Daniel!" Evelyn shrieked, hitting the gas.

Daniel scrambled into the passenger seat, slamming the door shut just as the Porsche jumped the wooden curb, smashing through the perimeter security fence and roaring toward the open industrial highway.
