Chapter 12 - Raiding the Ivory Tower Before the Assets Disappear

With Daniel and Evelyn locked inside maximum-security federal holding cells with no possibility of bail, the final phase of justice moved to the corporate headquarters of Vance Capital Group.

Armed with federal search warrants and emergency asset-freeze orders signed by the Chief Federal District Judge, a team of twenty FBI forensic accountants, ADA Marcus, Detective Miller, and I walked into the gleaming glass skyscraper in downtown Oakridge.

The moment we entered the executive suite on the 42nd floor, the entire office was in complete pandemonium. Shredder bins were overflowing, and Daniel’s private secretary was frantically clearing files.

"Step away from the computers! All electronic systems are under federal seizure!" the lead FBI agent announced, flashing his badge.

I walked directly into Daniel’s corner office—the pristine, opulent room where he had spent years feeling like a god among men.

Behind his massive marble desk hung a gigantic oil portrait of Daniel, looking smug, powerful, and untouchable.

"Take it down," I told the federal agents.

Two officers unhooked the multi-thousand-dollar portrait and threw it face down onto the floor.

Behind the frame was a hidden, biometric wall safe.

"Do you know the combination, Sarah?" ADA Marcus asked.

I looked at the digital keypad. For years, Daniel had bragged that his greatest achievement was the date he founded Vance Capital. But I knew his narcissism ran deeper than that.

I typed in: 0 - 5 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 (Five Million).

BEEP-CLICK.

The heavy steel safe door swung wide open.

Inside were three physical ledgers bound in black leather, two encrypted cold-storage cryptocurrency hard drives, and the original, unaltered partnership agreements that Evelyn Cross thought she had destroyed.

The FBI forensic lead flipped through the black ledgers, letting out a low whistle.

"This is the holy grail," the agent said. "Daniel kept a dual-entry bookkeeping system detailing every dollar he embezzled, every bribe paid to local officials, and the complete paper trail linking Evelyn Cross’s brother directly to the acquisition of the Vecuronium."

"What about the family assets?" I asked ADA Marcus.

Marcus smiled—a genuine, triumphant smile. "Because you are the legal, un-divorced spouse and the primary victim of his felonious acts, under the state's Slayer Statute and federal restitution laws, Daniel and Evelyn’s entire personal estates, all offshore recovered accounts, the house, the commercial holdings, and full corporate liquidated assets revert entirely to a protective trust fund established in your and Noah's names."

Daniel Vance had tried to murder his family to save five million dollars.

In the end, his greed stripped him of every single cent, delivering over twenty-two million dollars in recovered wealth directly into the hands of the wife and son he had tried to destroy.
