Chapter 6 - Bruno’s Corporate Downfall And The Boardroom Betrayal

While Amber was hiding in her motel room and Indigo languished in a county holding cell awaiting his arraignment, Bruno Sterling was experiencing his own personal descent into absolute ruin.

At two o’clock on Thursday afternoon, Bruno showed up at the corporate headquarters of Apex Freight Systems, wearing his most expensive Italian suit, desperately trying to bypass the security barriers in the main lobby.

“I am an executive officer of this corporation!” Bruno screamed at the head of building security, his face mottled with red sweat. “I have stock options! I have personal effects in my office! You cannot bar me from my own floor!”

Arthur Pendelton, the sixty-eight-year-old Chief Executive Officer and principal shareholder of Apex Freight—a man who had personally mentored Bruno for eight years—stepped out of the private executive elevator into the lobby, flanked by two corporate attorneys and three uniformed city police officers.

The lobby, bustling with hundreds of junior analysts, account managers, and visiting clients, went dead silent.

“Arthur!” Bruno gasped, rushing forward with his hands outstretched. “Thank God you’re down here. There’s been a massive administrative misunderstanding. My wife... she’s going through a severe psychological breakdown. She fabricated these wild financial claims to sabotage my standing in the company because we are going through a messy marital separation!”

Arthur Pendelton didn't extend his hand. He looked at Bruno with an expression of profound, unadulterated disgust.

“A psychological breakdown, Bruno?” Arthur spoke, his deep, resonant voice carrying across the marble lobby. “Did your wife also fabricate the sixty-two separate wire transfers authorized from your terminal using your private digital security key to 'Sterling Capital Partners'—a non-existent entity registered to your father’s residential address?”

Bruno froze, his hands dropping to his sides. “Arthur... I can explain those invoices... they were for third-party logistics consulting...”

“We already interviewed your father’s supposed 'consulting team,'” Arthur interrupted coldly. “There are no employees. There are no reports. There is only an offshore routing conduit to Grand Cayman and a series of high-end lease payments for a luxury penthouse in the marina district.”

Whispers exploded across the lobby. Dozens of Bruno’s colleagues, people he had condescended to and berated for years, pulled out their phones, watching the once-arrogant Vice President disintegrate in real time.

“Furthermore,” Arthur continued, pulling a document from his pocket, “the Board of Directors met this morning in an emergency session. We have unanimously voted to terminate your employment with immediate effect, for cause. All unvested stock options, severance packages, and deferred compensation are completely forfeited under the company’s anti-fraud bylaws.”

“You can’t do that!” Bruno cried out, his voice cracking with desperation. “I built the Midwest logistics network! You owe me millions!”

“We owe you nothing,” Arthur said, stepping aside. “What we have done, however, is hand over the complete unredacted audit to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the District Attorney’s Financial Crimes Division. Detective Miller and Detective Vance are here to serve you.”

One of the officers stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

“Bruno Sterling, you are under arrest for Grand Larceny in the First Degree, Scheme to Defraud, and Interstate Wire Fraud. You have the right to remain silent...”

“No! No! Wait!” Bruno shrieked, backing away toward the revolving doors. “Call my father! Call Indigo Sterling! He will settle this! We have assets! We have three million dollars coming in from an estate trust!”

“Your father was arrested yesterday for felony trespass and criminal property destruction, Mr. Sterling,” the officer said, grabbing Bruno’s arm, twisting it behind his back, and snapping the cuffs securely around his wrists. “And your wife’s trust has already obtained an asset freeze against every account linked to your name.”

As Bruno was marched across the marble floor in handcuffs, past hundreds of his former subordinates who openly watched and recorded his humiliation, he caught sight of Chloe Vance standing near the entrance, holding a leather briefcase.

“Chloe!” Bruno yelled, tears of humiliation and panic streaming down his face. “Tell Jade to stop this! Tell her I’ll sign whatever she wants! Tell her I’m sorry! She can have the house! Just tell her to drop the charges!”

Chloe looked at him with icy detachment, adjusting her sunglasses.

“Jade doesn't want your apologies, Bruno,” Chloe said calmly as the officers pushed him through the revolving glass doors toward the waiting police cruiser. “She already took the house. Now she’s taking everything else.”
