Chapter 10 - The Arrest At The High-End Country Club Gala

(Note: The narrative now transitions into the legal deposition and forensic dismantling of their entire fraudulent enterprise before the final court hearing.)
The days leading up to the final judicial hearing felt like the clearing of a massive storm that had hung over my life for a decade.
While Bruno sat in county remand following his bail revocation for violating the protective order, Chloe and Mark Torres executed the final phase of our financial retrieval strategy.
Every single asset the Sterlings had acquired through ten years of fraudulent siphoning was systematically audited, frozen, and placed into a court-ordered receivership. The Clearwater Hills mansion—which Indigo had bragged about across the city as the "Sterling Dynasty Compound"—was formally transferred into my ownership under the distressed mortgage note buyout.
On Friday morning, Chloe and I arrived at the County Judicial Complex for the mandatory pre-trial evidentiary deposition.
In the grand deposition suite on the fourth floor, three separate defense attorneys sat looking completely overwhelmed, surrounded by hundreds of binders filled with bank statements, wire transfers, and criminal indictments.
Across the mahogany conference table sat Bruno, Amber, and Indigo, brought in under armed sheriff escort from their respective detention facilities.
All three were dressed in orange institutional jumpsuits, their hands secured in waist chains.
Amber looked aged by twenty years. Her hair was completely gray at the roots, her skin hollow and sallow, her hands trembling uncontrollably as she stared down at the polished wood table. Indigo sat slumped, his former bluster entirely broken, his eyes darting nervously toward the assistant district attorneys seated in the corner.
Bruno sat in the center, refusing to look at his parents, his eyes sunken and dark.
The presiding special referee, Retired Judge Vance Reynolds, adjusted his reading glasses and tapped his gavel on the table.
“We are on the record in the matter of Jade Sterling v. Bruno Sterling, et al., Case Number 2024-DR-8841. Counsel for the plaintiff, you may present your final terms of settlement and asset restitution before criminal transfer.”
Chloe Vance stood up, opening a sleek black leather binder.
“Your Honor,” Chloe began, her voice carrying the absolute authority of unyielding law. “We have established, beyond any standard of reasonable doubt, that over the course of ten years, the defendants Bruno Sterling, Indigo Sterling, and Amber Sterling engaged in a systematic pattern of domestic abuse, wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement totaling $2,840,000.”
Indigo’s defense attorney cleared his throat weakly. “Your Honor, my client is prepared to sign an unconditional waiver of all claims to the Oakridge estate and any trust funds, provided the plaintiff requests leniency from the District Attorney regarding the securities fraud charges...”
“There will be no leniency,” I spoke, stepping forward and looking Judge Reynolds directly in the eye.
The room fell completely silent.
“For ten years,” I said, looking across the table at the three people in chains who had terrorized my life, “I was told that my worth was defined by how much abuse I could endure in silence. I was beaten in my own home because I refused to allow them to steal the legacy my grandmother spent her life building. These people are not victims of a misunderstanding. They are unrepentant predators who used love, marriage, and family as weapons of extortion.”
Amber began to sob softly, burying her face in her shackled hands. “Jade... please... I’m an old woman... I can't survive state prison...”
“You should have thought about that, Amber,” I replied without blinking, “before you held me down by my hair and told your husband to kick me until I signed away my life.”
Judge Reynolds reviewed the documents before him, his expression stern and unyielding.
“The court finds the plaintiff’s evidence overwhelming and incontrovertible,” Judge Reynolds ruled, stamping the decree with heavy, resounding finality. “All real property in Oakridge Estates and Clearwater Hills is awarded solely and exclusively to Jade Sterling with zero equitable offset. All frozen shell accounts are ordered liquidated to provide full corporate restitution to Apex Freight Systems and the defrauded private investors. The marriage between Jade Sterling and Bruno Sterling is hereby dissolved with extreme prejudice.”
The judge looked at the three defense attorneys.
“As for the criminal matters,” the judge added, looking at the county prosecutors, “this court finds probable cause on all forty-eight felony counts. The defendants will remain remanded without bail until their formal criminal trial next month.”
The gavel slammed down.
Bang.
The sound echoed through the high-ceilinged room like the closing of a tomb.
Indigo closed his eyes, slumping entirely forward against the table. Amber let out a long, wailing sob as two female deputies hoisted her to her feet by her arms. Bruno sat completely motionless, a solitary tear cutting a clean line through the dust on his cheek as he was pulled backward toward the holding cell door.
As Bruno passed my chair, he whispered, his voice broken and hollow:
“You took everything from us, Jade.”

I looked him in the eye, adjusted my suit jacket, and spoke the final truth:
“I didn't take anything from you, Bruno. You destroyed yourselves. I just stopped paying the bill.”
